Tobacco Production โ Tobacco production refers to the total quantity of raw, unmanufactured tobacco leaves harvested from tobacco crops within a country or region during a specific year, generally measured in tonnes. It represents the agricultural output generated through the cultivation, growth, and harvesting of tobacco plants for commercial use. This macro indicator tracks changes in tobacco farming activities, production volumes, cultivation practices, harvested area, and yield performance over time, providing insights into the scale and trends of tobacco crop production across different regions.
However, production decreased sharply in 2017 to 4.31525 thousand tonnes before recovering to 5.70015 thousand tonnes in 2018. In 2019, Chile recorded an increase to 7.3616 thousand tonnes, representing the highest production level after 2015. Production then declined to 6.439 thousand tonnes in 2020, followed by further reductions to 3.92476 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 2.584 thousand tonnes in 2022. The downward movement continued in 2023, with production reaching 1.718 thousand tonnes, before showing a slight recovery to 3.03052 thousand tonnes in 2024. The data reflects significant fluctuations in Chileโs tobacco farming sector, influenced by factors such as agricultural land allocation, climate variability, farming decisions, regulatory measures, and changing market demand. Tobacco production in this indicator represents only the harvested quantity of raw tobacco leaves cultivated within the country and does not include processed tobacco products, cigarette manufacturing, trade activities, consumption, or economic contributions from the tobacco industry. The decline from 7.2735 thousand tonnes in 2015 to 3.03052 thousand tonnes in 2024 demonstrates a considerable reduction in cultivation scale. While Chile maintains some tobacco-growing activities, the industry has become smaller compared with other agricultural sectors. Future production trends may depend on agricultural policies, farmer participation, and changes in domestic and international tobacco demand.
