Tobacco Production โ Tobacco production refers to the total quantity of raw, unmanufactured tobacco leaves harvested from tobacco crops within a country or region during a specific year, generally measured in tonnes. It represents the agricultural output generated through the cultivation, growth, and harvesting of tobacco plants for commercial use. This macro indicator tracks changes in tobacco farming activities, production volumes, cultivation practices, harvested area, and yield performance over time, providing insights into the scale and trends of tobacco crop production across different regions.
Spain has traditionally been an important tobacco-producing country in Europe, with cultivation mainly concentrated in regions such as Extremadura, where favorable climate conditions support commercial tobacco farming. In 2015, Spain produced 29.534 thousand tonnes of tobacco, followed by a slight decline to 29.238 thousand tonnes in 2016. Production increased marginally in 2017, reaching 29.679 thousand tonnes, before decreasing to 25.98 thousand tonnes in 2018. In 2019, output increased slightly to 27.77 thousand tonnes, but production declined again in 2020 to 24.53 thousand tonnes. The sector experienced a small recovery in 2021, reaching 26.02 thousand tonnes, followed by further reductions in 2022 and 2023, with production levels of 19.94 thousand tonnes and 12.38 thousand tonnes, respectively. In 2024, production showed improvement, increasing to 19.41 thousand tonnes. The overall decline reflects the challenges faced by Spainโs tobacco farming sector, including lower domestic demand, stricter tobacco control measures, increasing production costs, and competition from international suppliers. Spanish farmers primarily cultivate tobacco varieties used for cigarette manufacturing and industrial processing, supported by established agricultural infrastructure and technical expertise. Although production volumes have decreased, Spain continues to play a role in the European tobacco supply chain through efficient cultivation methods and high-quality leaf production. The countryโs tobacco industry has gradually shifted toward improving productivity, maintaining quality standards, and adapting to changing market requirements. The production trend between 2015 and 2024 indicates a contraction in cultivation levels while demonstrating the continued resilience of Spainโs specialized tobacco farming sector.
