INDIANAPOLIS, United States — August 26, 2026 — Elanco Animal Health Incorporated (NYSE: ELAN) has announced the on-time completion of a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing expansion at its Elwood, Kansas facility, representing a $120 million capital investment aimed at significantly scaling monoclonal antibody (mAb) production capacity for the Animal Vaccines Market and the broader animal health biologics sector.
The expansion increases the Elwood site's production capacity by more than four times through the addition of upstream and downstream processing equipment, a new pilot plant to accelerate process development, a new quality control laboratory, and additional support infrastructure. A further $30 million investment is planned through 2028 for additional warehousing, bringing the total committed capital to $150 million.
Elanco is one of only two animal health companies globally with mAb solutions currently on the market. The expanded facility supports the manufacturing of Befrena™ (tirnovetmab), a recently launched anti-IL-31 mAb injection for canine allergic and atopic dermatitis, as well as Trutect™, the first and only approved therapeutic solution for canine parvovirus, which received full regulatory approval in 2025. According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, the global Animal Vaccines Market was valued at USD 12.7 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 22.4 billion by 2035, advancing at a CAGR of 5.8% over the 2026–2035 forecast period.
Capacity Scale-Up: The Elwood, Kansas expansion increases mAb manufacturing capacity by more than four times, directly addressing supply constraints driven by demand for Befrena™ running at twice the company's initial projections.
Total Capital Commitment: The combined investment of $150 million — $120 million in the current expansion and $30 million in planned warehousing through 2028 — underscores Elanco's long-term commitment to biologics manufacturing infrastructure.
Pipeline Support: The new pilot plant included in the expansion is designed to accelerate process development and supply clinical testing materials, positioning Elanco to advance its next-generation mAb pipeline more efficiently.
Regional Economic Impact: The project, led by design-build firm Burns & McDonnell of Kansas City, Missouri, was completed in partnership with the State of Kansas, Doniphan County, and the City of Elwood, creating high-demand manufacturing employment in the region.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, Elanco's $150 million Elwood facility investment reflects a broader structural shift in the animal health biologics sector, where monoclonal antibody platforms are transitioning from niche therapeutic applications to mainstream companion animal care. The expansion signals that demand for advanced biological therapies in veterinary medicine is outpacing initial commercial forecasts, a trend consistent with NMSC's projection that the Companion Animals segment will grow at a CAGR of 7.1% from 2026 to 2035.
NMSC analysts note that as pet humanization trends continue to elevate veterinary healthcare expenditure across North America and Europe, manufacturers with proprietary mAb manufacturing infrastructure will be positioned to capture premium pricing and durable competitive advantages in the companion animal biologics segment — a dynamic that is expected to accelerate consolidation and capital investment across the animal health industry through 2030.
Elanco's completion of the Elwood expansion arrives at a pivotal moment for the animal health biologics sector. With customer demand for Befrena™ running at twice the company's initial expectations and unconstrained supply levels not anticipated until early 2027, the investment addresses a near-term commercial bottleneck while simultaneously building the manufacturing foundation for Elanco's broader mAb pipeline.
The development is indicative of a wider industry trend in which leading animal health companies are committing substantial capital to biologics manufacturing infrastructure, recognizing that next-generation therapeutic platforms — including mAbs, recombinant vaccines, and nucleic acid biologicals — will define competitive positioning in the animal health market through 2035. With the global Animal Vaccines Market on a trajectory toward USD 22.4 billion by 2035, manufacturing scale and biologics platform depth are increasingly central to long-term market leadership.
