The company began developing shipbuilding applications in 2017 and has since supplied batteries to 900 vessels, all currently operating on rivers. CATL stated that Yujian 77, China’s first pure-electric cruise ship equipped with its high-performance battery system, has been delivering zero-emission and low-noise tourism experiences since operations commenced in July.

According to the company, CATL’s battery deliveries to shipbuilders currently account for around 40 per cent of the global electric vessel market, highlighting its expanding footprint beyond electric cars.

Gotion Demonstrates Commercial Viability

Gotion High-tech, backed by Volkswagen Group, reported earlier this month that its battery packs successfully powered a ship with a loading capacity of 132 standard containers. The vessel, named Puffer Fish Blue 01, was developed by China’s Wuhu Shipyard in collaboration with Sandianshui New Energy Technology and has received certification from the China Classification Society.

The achievement demonstrates the technical readiness of EV-grade battery systems for maritime use and signals increasing confidence in electric propulsion for commercial shipping applications.

Industry observers see these developments as a reflection of China’s growing influence in shipbuilding. Xiong Hao, assistant general manager at Shanghai Jump International Shipping, noted that the investments and efforts behind pure electric container vessels illustrate China’s rising global presence, while also highlighting that widespread adoption by global container liners remains to be seen.
