GCT Semiconductor, Skylo Advance Satellite Connectivity

Industry Insights from Next Move Strategy Consulting

GCT Semiconductor Holding, Inc., a leading designer and supplier of advanced 5G and 4G semiconductor solutions, has entered into a strategic partnership with Skylo Technologies, Inc., a global Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) provider with coverage spanning 36 countries across approximately 70 million square kilometers. The collaboration aims to accelerate the advancement of next-generation satellite connectivity for cellular IoT devices by jointly pursuing chip and module certification that supports seamless global communications.

Expanding Connectivity Beyond Terrestrial Boundaries

This alliance focuses on enabling a new class of multi-use devices capable of maintaining ubiquitous connectivity by automatically switching to Skylo’s satellite network when traditional terrestrial networks are unavailable. The integrated solutions are designed to offer reliable connectivity for industrial IoT applications in remote or hard-to-reach regions, reducing dependency on existing cellular infrastructure.

GCT’s CEO, John Schlaefer, described the partnership as a significant step in reinforcing the company’s commitment to the rapidly expanding 5G-to-space ecosystem and said it will help propel the next wave of global satellite connectivity for device makers and end customers.

From Skylo’s perspective, Vijay Krishnan, Vice President of Strategy Partnerships, emphasized that merging GCT’s 3GPP-compliant silicon with Skylo’s satellite network eliminates traditional cellular coverage limitations. According to Krishnan, this collaboration demonstrates a ready-to-scale ecosystem that brings standards-based IoT connectivity to even the most remote areas and sets “always-on” connectivity as the new industry standard.

Collaborative Certification and Market Implications

The joint effort on chip and module certification underscores both companies’ focus on establishing robust device interoperability and standards compliance. This initiative is expected to give manufacturers and service providers confidence in deploying hybrid connectivity solutions that seamlessly use Earth-based and satellite infrastructures.

Next Move Strategy Consulting’s Analysis

Industry analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting observe that this partnership between a semiconductor solutions leader and a major NTN provider highlights a pivotal trend in the semiconductor market: the convergence of terrestrial and satellite networks to meet surging global demand for uninterrupted connectivity. As IoT adoption expands across sectors such as logistics, agriculture, and energy, having robust satellite-enabled IoT devices could reshape deployment strategies by reducing coverage gaps in underserved regions. The collaboration also signals increasing investment momentum in 5G-to-space ecosystems, which are expected to influence supply chain priorities, device certification frameworks, and semiconductor design standards in the coming years.
