In a significant stride for India’s technology manufacturing ambitions, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate Micron Technology’s advanced semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on February 28, 2026. The state-of-the-art plant, backed by an investment of ₹22,516 crore, represents one of the largest semiconductor projects in the country to date and is poised to reinforce India’s position in the global chip ecosystem.
The Sanand ATMP facility, established by Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt. Ltd., has been developed through a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Gujarat government in June 2023. Currently employing around 2,000 people, the site is expected to expand its workforce to about 5,000 direct jobs once fully operational, with additional indirect employment opportunities anticipated. The plant also highlights inclusive employment practices, with specially-abled individuals serving as operators and technicians.
Designed to produce key memory and storage products such as Solid-State Drives (SSDs), DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory), and NAND flash memory, the ATMP facility will play a pivotal role in serving demand across computing, mobile devices, data centers and other digital infrastructure. According to Micron’s leadership, advanced memory and storage technologies underpin the performance requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and other high-growth applications, making domestic manufacturing capabilities increasingly strategic.
The ATMP plant functions at the back end of semiconductor production. Once silicon wafers-with intricate electronic layers created through photolithography-are produced, they are cut into individual chips. At the Sanand facility, these chips will be assembled, rigorously tested for performance, marked with manufacturing information, and packaged for distribution to both Indian and international markets. The facility will receive DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global production network and convert them into finished memory products.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting (NMSC), the inauguration of Micron’s ATMP facility represents a critical advancement in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey. The establishment of large-scale back-end manufacturing capabilities strengthens supply chain resilience while enhancing the country’s attractiveness as a semiconductor investment destination.
NMSC observes that projects of this scale contribute not only to employment generation but also to technological capability development in high-value manufacturing segments. As global demand for memory and storage solutions continues to expand, India’s growing participation in semiconductor assembly and packaging positions the nation for deeper integration into the global electronics value chain.
The inauguration of this cutting-edge ATMP plant marks a major step in expanding India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. As demand for memory and storage solutions continues to rise worldwide, especially in AI-driven sectors, the Sanand facility is expected to enhance the country’s role in the global technology supply chain while supporting job creation and industrial growth.
