Amid the US Army’s push to modernize its vertical lift fleet, Rolls-Royce has commenced testing of the AE 1107F engine intended for the MV-75 Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) prototypes. This development represents a pivotal step in the high-priority multibillion-dollar FLRAA program, which aims to replace a significant portion of the Army’s current assault helicopter fleet with a more capable tiltrotor design.
Engine evaluations are underway at Rolls-Royce’s Indianapolis facility, the company’s largest in the United States, where engineers are validating performance and dependability ahead of the aircraft’s subsequent development stages. The AE 1107F, part of the established AE family of turboshaft engines, will equip each MV-75 FLRAA with two units, offering power and durability for a wide range of tactical missions.
Candice Bineyard, Rolls-Royce’s director of US business development and future programs, described the AE 1107F as an advanced, low-risk propulsion solution, underscoring its readiness to support the Army’s requirements.
A defining feature of the AE 1107F is its approximately 80 percent commonality with other AE engine variants, a design strategy that is expected to streamline logistics, simplify maintenance, and mitigate supply chain complexity critical factors for sustaining operational readiness in defense applications.
Designated in June as part of the Army’s FLRAA initiative, the MV-75 tiltrotor often described in industry commentary as capable of “twice the range and twice the speed” compared with legacy platforms offers extended operational reach and enhanced maneuverability across diverse mission profiles. Its anticipated operational range could double to approximately 230 miles, while cruise speeds may exceed 310 mph, enabling rapid insertion, extraction, and resupply operations in contested environments.
Brig. Gen. David Phillips, the Army’s program executive officer for aviation, emphasized the service’s commitment to fielding an aircraft that delivers the required combination of speed, range, and endurance for future large-scale combat operations.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the recent focus on propulsion systems like the AE 1107F reflects broader dynamics shaping the Aircraft Engine Market. Increasingly, defense and commercial sectors are prioritizing technologies that offer commonality, logistical efficiency, and risk reduction across engine families. This trend is particularly pronounced in defense procurement, where sustainment, parts availability, and lifecycle support are as crucial as raw performance.
In addition to commonality benefits, the industry is witnessing a convergence of manufacturing innovation, advanced propulsion design, and supply chain resiliency. Engines incorporating modular architectures and adaptable components not only support modern mission requirements but also help operators manage costs and delivery timelines more effectively.
As military modernization efforts continue to accelerate and commercial aviation seeks greater efficiency and sustainability, engines that balance performance with maintainability and adaptability are expected to play increasingly prominent roles across market segments.
