TOKYO, Japan — August 10, 2026 — Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) have announced plans to invest approximately 1 trillion yen ($6.32 billion) in a joint venture to manufacture next-generation microchips used in image sensors, a development that carries significant implications for the global smart sensors market. The joint venture, to be established in Kumamoto prefecture in southern Japan, is expected to begin commercial production as early as 2029, according to a report by the Nikkei business daily.
The partnership, first announced in May 2026, will be structured with Sony holding approximately 60% ownership and TSMC holding the remaining 40%. The venture is designed to combine Sony's industry-leading sensor design expertise with TSMC's advanced semiconductor manufacturing and process technology capabilities.
Beyond image sensors for smartphones and automotive applications, the two companies have indicated that the joint venture will explore opportunities in physical artificial intelligence (AI) applications — including automotive systems and robotics — sectors that are increasingly reliant on advanced sensing technologies.
Sony is currently the world's largest manufacturer of image sensors, widely deployed in smartphones and automobiles, while TSMC holds the position of the world's largest contract chipmaker. The combined capabilities of both companies are expected to accelerate the development of next-generation sensing solutions at scale.
Sony Group and TSMC plan to invest approximately $6.32 billion (1 trillion yen) in a joint image sensor manufacturing venture in Kumamoto, Japan.
The joint venture will be approximately 60% owned by Sony and 40% by TSMC, combining sensor design expertise with advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
Commercial production at the Kumamoto facility is targeted to begin as early as 2029, subject to regulatory and operational milestones.
The partnership will explore physical AI applications in automotive and robotics sectors, expanding the strategic scope of next-generation image sensor technology.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, the Sony-TSMC joint venture represents a pivotal consolidation of sensor design and semiconductor manufacturing capabilities at a time when demand for advanced sensing solutions is accelerating across automotive, industrial, and AI-driven applications. NMSC analysts note that the global smart sensors market, valued at USD 45.52 billion in 2023, is projected to reach USD 150.10 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 18.2% from 2024 to 2030 — underscoring the strategic importance of investments of this scale in next-generation sensor manufacturing infrastructure.
The Sony-TSMC joint venture signals a broader industry trend toward vertical integration and strategic collaboration in the smart sensors supply chain. As demand for high-performance image sensors intensifies across smartphones, autonomous vehicles, robotics, and physical AI platforms, investments in advanced manufacturing capacity are expected to become increasingly critical. The Kumamoto facility, once operational, is positioned to serve as a key production hub for next-generation sensing technologies, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics across the global sensor manufacturing landscape.
