WETZLAR, Germany — May 18, 2026 — Vossloh AG has announced its intention to acquire UK-based Cordel Group, a specialist in LiDAR technology and AI-powered railway infrastructure monitoring solutions. The move marks a significant expansion of Vossloh’s digital rail strategy as global operators accelerate investment in automated infrastructure inspection systems.
The proposed transaction values Cordel Group at approximately GBP 29 million (EUR 33 million) and will be carried out through a court-approved scheme of arrangement under UK law. Subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, the acquisition is expected to close during the third quarter of 2026.
Cordel Group develops advanced train-mounted LiDAR systems capable of capturing high-resolution 3D images and digital data from railway corridors. The company’s technology is designed to identify infrastructure risks such as ballast deformation, clearance obstacles, and vegetation interference affecting electrified rail lines.
The platform combines LiDAR scanning with artificial intelligence to automate inspection and maintenance workflows, enabling rail operators to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual monitoring requirements.

Industry analysts note that LiDAR and AI integration is becoming increasingly critical as rail operators modernize aging infrastructure and seek predictive maintenance capabilities.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting analysts, the acquisition reflects a broader industry shift toward digital rail ecosystems powered by automation and sensor intelligence.
“Rail infrastructure operators are increasingly prioritizing AI-driven monitoring technologies to improve safety, asset visibility, and maintenance efficiency,” said an analyst at Next Move Strategy Consulting. “The integration of LiDAR systems into railway operations is expected to accelerate as infrastructure networks become more data-centric.”
Cordel’s solutions are currently deployed by major railway operators and infrastructure managers across the UK, North America, Australia, and the Middle East, including Amtrak and Network Rail.
Vossloh stated that combining Cordel’s AI-powered LiDAR systems with its existing laser inspection technologies will support the development of automated continuous monitoring solutions for railway infrastructure.
The two companies previously collaborated on a pilot project in continental Europe during 2025 to evaluate integrated rail inspection capabilities. The successful testing phase reportedly demonstrated strong compatibility between the combined technologies.
Vossloh CEO Oliver Schuster described the acquisition as a strategic opportunity to strengthen the company’s presence in innovative rail services and expand into emerging digital infrastructure markets.
As railway operators worldwide pursue smarter and more resilient transportation systems, the acquisition signals growing momentum for AI-enabled LiDAR technologies within the global rail sector.
