Hydrogen hubs have emerged as pivotal components in the global shift towards clean energy, enabling large-scale hydrogen production, storage, and distribution for diverse industrial applications. The Government of Saskatchewan has revealed plans to accelerate the development of a potential hydrogen hub in the Regina-Moose Jaw region.
In July 2024, the Government of Canada allocated nearly CAD 10 million to launch the Clean Hydrogen Hub and scale-up made-in-Canada innovation.
The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan), announced $150,000 in PacifiCan funding for the City of Prince George to advance the planning and development of a regional hydrogen hub serving Central and Northern B.C.
The Calgary region is making significant progress in strengthening its competitive position within the growing low-carbon global economy through the launch of the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub (CRH2). Led by the Transition Accelerator, this innovative hub leverages the area's status as Canada's energy capital to attract investment, generate employment, and establish the region as a leader in the clean hydrogen industry.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) allocated up to AUD 432 million in grant funding to support Orica’s Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub. As the second project selected under ARENA’s Hydrogen Headstart Program, the hub is set to produce renewable hydrogen through a 50 MW electrolyser powered entirely by renewable electricity.
In March 2025, ARENA announced the first funding recipient under its Hydrogen Headstart Program. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ 1,500 MW Murchison green hydrogen project, located in Western Australia, was awarded AUD 814 million in funding through the program’s first round.
A new tax incentive zone near Beaumont and Port Arthur was approved on Tuesday morning, paving the way for a natural gas-powered hydrogen plant, which is anticipated to be the first project to begin construction at the site in 2029.
Chevron’s Project Labrador for Crescent Bayou has reached an agreement with Jefferson County to create 100 full-time jobs at its planned gas-powered hydrogen production facility, which will be located along the Gulf Coast, west of Port Arthur and south of Texas 73.
Chevron’s project has the potential to expand through two additional phases and, under the agreement, will benefit from a 100% tax exemption at the site for a period of 10 years.
This facility is a key component of Chevron's broader initiative to develop a Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, which aims to produce hydrogen from natural gas for a range of applications, including fuel cell trucks, industrial operations, and ammonia production.
More than half of Canada’s hydrogen and fuel cell companies are based in British Columbia, contributing to nearly 60% of the country’s total research investments in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
PacifiCan, the federal economic development agency focused on British Columbia, collaborates with local partners to advance innovative businesses, generate high-quality jobs, and promote inclusive economic growth across the province.
Through its Regional Innovation Ecosystems (RIE) program, PacifiCan works to build, expand, and strengthen inclusive regional innovation networks. The program supports the needs of businesses across all stages of innovation and helps foster an entrepreneurial climate that drives innovation, competitiveness, and long-term economic growth.

Leaders Highlight Calgary’s Growing Role in Advancing the Hydrogen Economy
“Alberta has the skills and expertise to lead in the net-zero economy. Our government’s investment in the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub will position Calgary at the forefront of knowledge sharing, hydrogen corridor development, and the creation of hydrogen supply and demand opportunities—not just within southern Alberta, but far beyond.”
— Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
“Calgary has long been a leader in energy innovation, and the launch of the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub marks another major step forward for our city. This initiative unites industry, government, and researchers to create jobs, attract investment, and strengthen Calgary’s role in the clean energy transition. We are building on our existing strengths, ensuring our economy remains competitive, and securing Calgary’s leadership in the energy sector for the future.”
— George Chahal, Member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview
“The Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub will play a vital role in helping Alberta become a global supplier of hydrogen products to markets such as Japan and Korea, while also providing cleaner fuel options for Albertans and local industries.”
— Honourable Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals, Government of Alberta
The growing momentum of hydrogen hubs worldwide signals a transformative shift toward clean energy and economic diversification. From Canada’s aggressive hydrogen investments and regional hubs in Alberta and British Columbia to Australia’s landmark green hydrogen projects and Chevron’s major development in the U.S., governments and industries are forging strong partnerships to accelerate hydrogen adoption. These projects not only aim to reduce emissions but also stimulate job creation, technological innovation, and global competitiveness. As hydrogen infrastructure expands, it is set to play a critical role in achieving net-zero goals and driving sustainable industrial growth globally.
