Between 2024 and 2026, building the same illustrative desktop configuration got roughly 40–45% more expensive in NMSC's modeled scenario — and on that model, 87% of the modeled dollar increase comes from memory and storage rather than CPUs or GPUs, despite memory and storage representing only 13% of the machine's original modeled cost. This is not primarily a tariff story or a general inflation story. AI infrastructure demand is redirecting a growing share of memory manufacturing capacity toward HBM, server DRAM, and enterprise storage, which is tightening the supply available to consumer electronics. By "mid-range," we mean the specific 8-component configuration modeled in the Cost Impact Index: a 6–8 core desktop CPU, a 12GB-class GDDR GPU, 32GB of DDR5 memory, and a 1TB NVMe SSD — a common gaming/productivity spec, not an industry-standard definition.
The 2026 price spectrum
- +28.4%. A broad upstream indicator — the U.S. BLS import price index for semiconductors and electronic components (not a DRAM/NAND-specific price series) climbed from 77.4 to 99.4 in eight months (Nov 2025–Jul 2026). Treat it as directionally consistent with tightening memory supply, not a direct measurement of memory prices.
- The association forecast — +302% market value (Q2'26 update). WSTS's Spring 2026 forecast projected the global memory market growing roughly 250% year-over-year to more than $800bn; its Q2 2026 actuals update (Aug 2026, the most current release) revised that to +302% YoY, 53 points above the original estimate. This is revenue/demand growth, not a claim that memory unit prices rose 302%.
- The customs record (secondary-sourced) — up to +401–576%. Press reporting of South Korea's customs export-price data shows DRAM export unit prices up as much as 401–576% year-over-year through mid-2026. We were not able to independently reach the underlying Korea Customs/TRASS table, so this carries lower confidence than the BLS and WSTS figures above.

The AI memory shock does not land evenly across a PC's bill of materials. The market has effectively split into three exposure tiers — Tier C is anchored to representative retail data, Tiers II–III are NMSC modeled assumptions (see Methodology).
TIER C — REPRESENTATIVE RETAIL DATA
Memory & storage — the primary shock
A representative 32GB DDR5 kit moved from roughly $90 to $430 (retail trackers report a $375–470 range depending on retailer and date); a representative 1TB NVMe SSD moved from roughly $60 to $170. These are representative street prices for a specific product class, not a standardized market index. The direction and rough scale is corroborated by BLS's broader import-price index and by secondary-sourced Korea export-price reporting.
RAM: Team Group T-Force Delta RGB 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-5200 — $389.99 at Newegg (list $429.99), observed Sep 8, 2026 (Tom's Hardware); higher-spec T-Force Vulcan variant $415.99, same date/retailer.
SSD: Kingston NV3 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe — $156.77–$156.99 at Newegg, observed Sep 7–8, 2026 (Tom's Hardware; cheapestssd.com).
Our $430 and $170 modeled figures sit at or above these specific observed prices, reflecting a representative mainstream kit/drive rather than the single cheapest SKU on a given day.

These percentages are NMSC modeling assumptions, not independently measured market prices. CPUs carry minimal direct memory exposure; GPUs plausibly carry more via GDDR, though we have not linked to a specific GDDR-only dataset for this illustrative range.

U.S. government trade and price data (broad upstream indicator)
This report leans on the Import Price Index for Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing (IZ3344) — a genuinely current, monthly, government-published series, but a broad upstream indicator, not a DRAM/NAND-specific price series. Treat it as directionally consistent with tightening memory supply.

World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS)
WSTS is not a private research firm — it's an independent nonprofit founded in 1986, representing the vast majority of the global semiconductor industry. WSTS's Q2 2026 update (Aug 2026), the most current release, revised its memory-market forecast upward from the Spring 2026 estimate. Note: the memory-market figure is MARKET VALUE / revenue growth (pricing + demand + product mix), not a claim that unit prices rose 302%.

South Korea's customs export data (secondary-sourced)
Samsung and SK hynix together account for a majority of global DRAM revenue (~63% combined per Counterpoint Q2 2026) and a large — but not majority — share of NAND flash (~47% combined). Korea's customs statistics (via TRASS) are among the most granular government trade data on memory pricing available, but this report reached them only through secondary outlets, not the primary table itself — treat the figures below as Tier B / secondary-sourced.

PILLAR 4
The reversal in the U.S. Consumer Price Index
BLS's CPI for computers, peripherals, and smart home assistants (this series begins in 2007) had declined in most years on record. It bottomed in December 2025 at 33.730, then rose to 36.641 by July 2026 (the latest available reading) — an increase of approximately 8.6% in seven months, reversing a long period of declining computer prices.

Taken together, the indicators above are directionally consistent with a tightening memory supply chain: strong AI-related demand is visible in industry forecasts and supplier commentary, while upstream trade/import-price indicators and downstream consumer-price data both show substantial price pressure over the same window. We have not modeled a formal econometric lag between these series, and readers should treat the relationship as directional evidence rather than a proven causal chain.

Dell — speed and transparency
Dell's COO went on record in November 2025 saying he had "never seen memory-chip costs rise this fast." Two distinct, separately-sourced price actions followed: (1) consumer PCs rose 15–20% from mid-December 2025 (per TrendForce reporting), and (2) commercial/enterprise 32GB configurations were separately reported up $130–230, with quote-validity windows on some server configs shrinking to 7–14 days (per TechRadar Pro reporting). These are two different product lines and two different sources — don't read one as confirming the other.

Lenovo — the hard deadline
Rather than a rolling series of increases, Lenovo set a single cutover: all quotes were reported to expire January 1, 2026, with industry reporting attributing the move to an intensifying memory shortage and rising AI-driven demand. We have not independently verified the exact original Lenovo customer communication.

HP — draw down inventory first
HP's CEO said memory had grown to 15–18% of total PC bill-of-materials cost — roughly double the prior year — and that existing stockpiles would only hold prices through the first half of 2026.

Apple — last to move, largest to absorb
Apple didn't raise prices until June 25, 2026 — after Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Dell, HP, and Lenovo had already acted. Longer supply contracts and a larger balance sheet likely bought it more runway, not immunity.

Micron / Crucial — exit the consumer tier entirely
Micron announced its exit from the Crucial consumer memory and SSD business on December 3, 2025, with consumer shipments continuing through February 2026 — reallocating capacity toward higher-margin AI and enterprise memory.

Console makers — the fixed-price public record
Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo each raised console prices in 2025–2026: Microsoft explicitly cited storage/memory costs (up 2.5x+ since launch); Sony cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" and rolled back its second 2026 PS5 increase on August 21, 2026; Nintendo cited "various changes in market conditions."

When Could Memory Pricing Begin to Ease? (NMSC Outlook)
The mechanism for eventual relief is visible and already funded — roughly $870bn (1,350 trillion won), announced by South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung on June 29, 2026 as part of a government-industry "Three Mega Projects" initiative involving Samsung and SK hynix (per Bloomberg and CNBC reporting of the official announcement; spans memory, logic, and broader infrastructure, not purely memory-fab capacity), plus Micron's U.S. investment plan, expanded to more than $250bn through 2035 — but new fabs take years to reach production. NMSC outlook (a forecast, not an established fact): buyers, OEMs, and IT budget planners should plan around 2026 pricing persisting through at least 2027.
Buy to spec, not to headroom
With RAM and SSD priced so far out of line with the rest of the build, over-provisioning "for later" is one of the more expensive habits a buyer can carry into this market.
Consider sequencing refreshes earlier
