SEOUL, South Korea — October 27, 2026 — South Korean police have arrested a 32-year-old man accused of leading an AI-assisted hacking operation that stole personal records and internal files from about 90 organizations, totaling 8.2 million records. The case draws attention to the cyber security market.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced the case on October 26. The suspect was arrested on October 15 and referred to prosecutors on October 23. Six other suspects remain under investigation and are not in custody. Police said the attacks began in September 2025 and continued into October 2026.
Targets included hospitals, private academies, golf courses, universities and affiliates of large companies. Investigators said the group used stolen data to pressure victims for payment, and police identified 38 organizations connected to extortion attempts, with combined demands of 360 million won. That figure represents money demanded, not confirmed payments.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the cyber security market was valued at USD 197.4 billion in 2021. It is projected to reach USD 657.02 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 12.8% from 2022 to 2030.
Police said the suspect initially used conventional hacking tools and began using generative AI more widely in late August 2026.
About 60 of the targeted organizations were reportedly breached with help from AI tools, rather than every intrusion involving AI from the outset.
The suspect worked in penetration testing at a security company between 2019 and 2022, according to the report.
Public information does not provide a complete attack chain, a confirmed vulnerability list, or evidence that AI independently completed every intrusion.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, rising threats of phishing and malware among businesses are a principal driver of the cyber security market. NMSC analysts note that malware has expanded the capacity of cybercrime to infiltrate and damage electronic information networks, and that growing adoption of IoT, AI and bring-your-own-device practices adds to the risk.
NMSC analysts also identify high implementation costs for small and medium enterprises and a shortage of cybersecurity expertise as restraints on the market. They point to blockchain combined with AI for authenticated verification as a growth opportunity.
The case adds to attention on the role of AI in cybercrime, although key technical details remain undisclosed. NMSC projects the cyber security market to expand at a 12.8% CAGR through 2030, with North America expected to retain the largest share over the forecast period. Further disclosures from the investigation, including attack methods and the outcome of prosecutions, will clarify the practical role of AI in these incidents.
