UK Extends GPS-Based Digital Pay As You Go Rail Fare Trial to All Northern Route Passengers 

LONDON, United Kingdom — August 10, 2026 — The United Kingdom's Department for Transport (DfT) has announced an extension of its Digital Pay As You Go Rail Fare pilot scheme, making the GPS-based ticketing technology available to all passengers travelling on Northern's two designated trial routes, marking a significant advancement for the AI-Enabled Railway Market as governments accelerate the deployment of intelligent, data-driven rail solutions. 

The technology, which enables passengers to download a dedicated application that uses GPS tracking to automatically calculate fares without requiring physical check-in, check-out, or advance ticket purchases, has already facilitated more than 30,000 journeys since its initial rollout to 2,000 passengers in 2025. Prior to the current expansion, successful trials were conducted across routes including Leeds to Harrogate, Doncaster to Sheffield, and Leicester to Nottingham via Derby. 

The DfT's decision to broaden access reflects the Government's broader strategic shift away from a uniform national ticketing approach toward community-tailored fare solutions. The initiative is part of a £156 million government investment in new ticketing infrastructure, which will extend Pay As You Go capabilities to more than 100 additional stations across Greater Manchester, the Midlands, and the South East. A new Great British Railways (GBR) website and integrated application are also under development, designed to serve as a unified platform for ticket purchases, train times, and passenger support. 

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy stated that the Digital Pay As You Go trials have been "a huge success," adding that the expansion is intended to deliver "convenience, accessibility and flexibility for even more passengers" across Yorkshire and the wider North of England, describing the rollout as "rail reform in action.
