Circular Packaging and Quick Commerce Reshape the Food Packaging Market

Food Packaging Industry Pivots to Circular Economy and E-Commerce Demands at PSAC 2026

MUMBAI, India — October 14, 2026 — India's packaging sector is accelerating its transition toward circular economy principles and digital commerce-ready design, as industry leaders convened at the Packaging South Asia Conference (PSAC 2026) in Mumbai to address the evolving demands of e-commerce and quick-commerce channels. The developments signal a pivotal moment for the global Food Packaging Market, is projected to reach USD 565.13 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.3%.

The afternoon session at PSAC 2026, themed "Winning the eCommerce and qCommerce Shelf," examined how packaging design must evolve to enhance product visibility, consumer experience, delivery efficiency, sustainability, and profitability in the era of instant commerce. The session was moderated by Bhushan Namdeorao Yengade, founder of Binder Technology Consultancy and Vice President of the CPRTTF, who noted a distinct rise in environmental awareness among young urban consumers in Tier 1 cities across India.

Yengade observed that the rapid expansion of digital commerce has introduced specific challenges around material consumption and waste management. Because e-commerce removes the opportunity for consumers to physically examine a product before purchase, the package itself must serve as the primary quality indicator upon delivery a requirement that frequently leads to over-packaging and increased plastic waste in instant delivery systems.

Aakriti Goswami, Packaging Manager at Zomato, highlighted the technical innovations required to eliminate food spillage during transit without relying on excessive plastic wrapping, and spoke about her company's commitment to removing all plastic from its food delivery packaging systems. Sandeep Kumar Ghosh, Head of Packaging Development at HealthKart, underscored that transitioning to recyclable materials, lightweighting, and biodegradable alternatives are essential steps toward establishing a circular economy that minimizes industrial waste and complies with India's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations currently in force.

Key Highlights:

  • Circular economy adoption is gaining momentum across India's food packaging supply chain, driven by EPR compliance mandates and rising consumer demand for eco-friendly products.

  • Smart QR code systems are emerging as tools for supply chain transparency, enabling consumers to verify sustainability credentials and supporting a more resilient retail network.

  • Quick-commerce (qCommerce) packaging requires a precise balance between product protection and waste reduction, with panelists identifying over-packaging as a critical challenge in dense urban delivery environments.

  • Biodegradable and recyclable materials, alongside lightweighting strategies, are being prioritized by major brands such as Zomato and HealthKart to reduce plastic footprints and align with regulatory frameworks.

Analyst Insight:

According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, the convergence of e-commerce growth and sustainability mandates is reshaping packaging procurement and design strategies across the food sector. NMSC analysts note that as online grocery and quick-commerce platforms continue to scale, demand for packaging solutions that simultaneously protect product integrity, reduce material waste, and meet Extended Producer Responsibility requirements will intensify creating measurable growth opportunities for manufacturers that invest early in circular and intelligent packaging technologies.

Industry Outlook:

The PSAC 2026 discussions reflect a broader structural shift underway in the global food packaging industry. As digital commerce channels expand and regulatory frameworks around plastic usage tighten, packaging manufacturers and food brands face mounting pressure to redesign supply chains around sustainability without compromising delivery performance. The growing adoption of smart packaging technologies, biodegradable substrates, and reusable systems is expected to define competitive differentiation in the sector through 2030. Industry stakeholders that align product development with circular economy principles and EPR compliance are positioned to capture a disproportionate share of the market's projected growth.
