Clean Energy Supply Chain Risk Tests Renewable Energy Market

Clean Energy Supply-Chain Concentration Raises Questions About Global Energy Security

SINGAPORE, Singapore — October 27, 2026 — The International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Tuesday that the concentration of clean energy supply chains in a small number of countries is an emerging challenge for Southeast Asian economies, as regional electricity demand rises quickly. The warning bears on the renewable energy market, where equipment sourcing and supply security shape deployment.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol made the remarks at the Singapore International Energy Week conference. He did not name the countries involved. According to Reuters, China is by far the largest global supplier of renewable energy equipment, including solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles and batteries.

Birol said electricity demand across ASEAN countries is rising at twice the pace of overall energy consumption, driven by industrial electrification, air-conditioning needs, electric vehicles and data centres. Energy think tank Ember reported that Southeast Asian nations have spent more than $20 billion on Chinese-made clean-technology products so far in 2026.

According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the renewable energy market was valued at USD 856.08 billion in 2021. It is projected to reach USD 2,025.94 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 9.6% from 2022 to 2030.

Key Highlights:

  • Birol described the concentration of clean energy supply chains in a few countries as an emerging challenge for Southeast Asia, without identifying them.

  • Electricity demand in ASEAN countries is growing at twice the rate of overall energy use, driven by industry, cooling, electric vehicles and data centres.

  • Ember data show Southeast Asian purchases of Chinese-made clean-technology products exceeded $20 billion so far in 2026.

  • Birol said geopolitical tensions have become an increasingly dominant force in global energy markets, which he expects to raise the importance of energy security.

Analyst Insight:

According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, supply chain constraints have emerged as a bottleneck for renewable deployment. Availability of raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements and polysilicon remains volatile, causing pricing and delivery fluctuations.

NMSC analysts note that China, the U.S. and the EU are scaling up manufacturing of solar modules, electrolyzers and battery cells to reduce supply chain dependence. They add that rising electricity demand from industrialization, electric vehicle adoption and digitalization is creating growth opportunities, particularly in emerging markets.

Industry Outlook:

The remarks place supply security alongside deployment speed in the policy discussion on clean energy. NMSC projects the renewable energy market to expand at a 9.6% CAGR through 2030, with Asia-Pacific expected to retain its leading position over the forecast period. How Southeast Asian economies diversify equipment sourcing, and how quickly regional demand growth translates into procurement, are likely to be among the indicators to watch.
