Cardiovascular specialists at the ESC Congress 2024, cardiovascular specialists unveiled pivotal developments targeting high blood pressure. With hypertension impacting an estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide—half of whom struggle with inadequate control—these findings represent significant strides toward improving patient outcomes.
Researchers introduced baxdrostat, a novel oral therapy designed for patients whose blood pressure remains dangerously high despite combination treatments. After 12 weeks, individuals taking baxdrostat experienced an average 9–10 mmHg drop in systolic blood pressure compared to placebo—an impact considered substantial enough to reduce cardiovascular risk.
The BaxHTN trial, supported by AstraZeneca, included nearly 800 participants across dozens of clinics. Alarmingly, roughly half of the global hypertensive population falls into the resistant category, underscoring the urgency of new interventions.
Parallel to pharmaceutical advances, dietary choices also gained attention. A study presented at the conference revealed that consuming potassium-rich items—such as avocado, bananas, spinach, pulses, fish, nuts, and seeds—could reduce cardiovascular events, hospital stays, and mortality by 24%. Potassium’s ability to enhance sodium excretion from the body may underlie this significant health benefit.
Together, the results reflect a dual strategy in battling hypertension: new pharmaceuticals like baxdrostat may unlock control for those unresponsive to existing drugs, while achievable lifestyle changes offer a powerful preventive tool. The integration of both approaches could meaningfully reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease on patients and healthcare systems alike.
