ELLESMERE PORT, United Kingdom — August 3, 2026 — Essar Energy Transition has reaffirmed plans to invest £4.3 billion at its Stanlow refinery complex in northwest England by 2035, positioning hydrogen as the central link across a portfolio of low-carbon projects that includes large-scale hydrogen production, a hydrogen-fuelled power plant, carbon capture and storage infrastructure, and a sustainable aviation fuel facility. The announcement carries significant implications for the Hydrogen Hubs Market, which was valued at USD 2.35 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 6.51 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 18.5% from 2025 to 2030.

Two hydrogen production units are planned at Stanlow: an initial facility of approximately 350MW and a subsequent unit exceeding 700MW, together creating more than 1GW of combined hydrogen production capacity. Both units are designed to produce low-carbon hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture, with the captured CO₂ to be transported and stored permanently beneath the seabed via the HyNet pipeline network. A hydrogen-ready furnace installed in 2025 is already reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 16,600 tonnes annually, with a full transition to low-carbon hydrogen targeted for 2028 — a shift that could increase annual savings to approximately 200,000 tonnes.
Essar commissioned consultancy FGE NexantECA to assess the programme's potential economic impact. The resulting report estimates that Essar Energy Transition could generate £1.9 billion in annual UK gross value added by 2035, support 9,576 direct, indirect and induced jobs, and create an additional 3,765 construction-related positions. Of the total £4.3 billion capital programme, approximately £2.3 billion is expected to be spent within the United Kingdom.
Integrated Hub Model: Hydrogen production at Stanlow is designed to serve multiple end-uses simultaneously — refinery operations, regional industrial customers via the HyNet network, a hydrogen-fuelled power plant, and a methanol-to-jet sustainable aviation fuel facility — reducing the commercial risk associated with single-use hydrogen projects.
