GE Vernova Awarded HVDC Contract to Power India’s Renewable Expansion

Industry Insights from Next Move Strategy Consulting

As India accelerates its ambitious transition to sustainable energy, the nation's power grid requires transformative upgrades to connect vast

ewable generation zones to its population centers. In a significant move for the clean energy sector, GE Vernova’s Electrification Systems business has been awarded a pivotal contract by Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. The project will deploy a large-scale, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system for the 2.5 GW Khavda-South Olpad power transmission corridor, forming a critical backbone for India's renewable future.

Enabling a Clean Energy Superhighway

The Khavda-South Olpad corridor is designed to serve as a key artery for India’s national power grid. It will enable the efficient transfer of large volumes of clean electricity generated in western India, home to the massive Khavda renewable energy zone, to the wider national transmission network via South Olpad, a major pooling and injection point. This infrastructure is essential for harnessing the full potential of India's world-class renewable resources.

GE Vernova’s role centers on providing the advanced HVDC technology that makes such long-distance, high-capacity transmission viable. The contract involves supplying a ±500 kV, 2500 MW voltage sourced converter (VSC)-based bipolar HVDC system for the point-to-point link. This represents the highest-rated VSC-based HVDC system planned in India to date. The technology is uniquely suited for renewable energy integration, transmitting electricity over long distances with lower losses and greater controllability than conventional alternatives.

Project Scope and Strategic Execution

The comprehensive scope awarded to GE Vernova underscores the project's technical complexity and strategic importance. The company is responsible for the complete HVDC system design, including the converter stations at each end of the link, and the supply of all major converter station equipment. GE Vernova will also handle erection, testing, and commissioning activities. A key component will be the company's advanced eLumina™ control platform, engineered to ensure stable, secure, and efficient grid operations.

Highlighting a commitment to local expertise and execution, the project will be primarily carried out by GE Vernova’s India-based teams. Delivery is planned in phases, with overall completion targeted by 2030.

“India is one of the world’s most important power markets, with rapidly growing electricity demand and large scale renewable development,” said Philippe Piron, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Electrification Systems business. “This award reflects our continued commitment to India and our experience in delivering complex transmission projects that support grid reliability and long-term system performance.”

A Partnership for India’s Green Transition

The contract signifies a major collaboration between a global energy technology leader and a key Indian infrastructure developer. Adani Energy Solutions views the project as foundational to the nation's sustainable energy goals.

“Our partnership with GE Vernova for the Khavda-South Olpad transmission corridor marks a significant milestone in advancing large scale clean energy integration,” said Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. “We are steadfast in our commitment to enabling India’s green energy transition by building robust infrastructure for renewable power evacuation.”

According to Next Move Strategy Consulting

This landmark project is more than a single infrastructure award; it is a bellwether for global energy investment trends. According to analysis from Next Move Strategy Consulting, the scale and technological ambition of the Khavda-South Olpad corridor signal a decisive shift in capital allocation toward enabling grid modernization and large-scale renewable integration. Such projects are catalyzing a new investment cycle focused on transmission and smart grid infrastructure, moving beyond generation assets alone. This trend underscores a maturing renewable energy market where long-distance, high-efficiency power transfer solutions are becoming critical strategic investments for nations aiming to achieve energy security and decarbonization targets.

Powering a Sustainable Future

The award of this contract highlights the indispensable role of advanced transmission technology in the global energy transition. As nations like India pursue aggressive renewable energy targets, projects such as the Khavda-South Olpad HVDC corridor will serve as the essential superhighways, connecting clean power sources with demand centers. By providing the technological backbone for this critical link, GE Vernova and Adani Energy Solutions are not only powering grids but are actively powering a more sustainable and resilient energy future for millions.
