Greece Signs $3.6B Israeli Air Defense Deal, Creating 'Achilles Shield' Against Regional Threats 

TEL AVIV, Israel  August 31, 2026  Greece is set to sign a landmark $3.6 billion defense agreement with Israel in Tel Aviv, establishing a multilayered air defense network known as "Achilles Shield"  a development that underscores accelerating global investment in the Air Defense System Market, projected to reach USD 62.23 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 5.2%, according to Next Move Strategy Consulting. 

The agreement, negotiated over three years, will become the largest defense export deal in Israel's history, surpassing the $3.5 billion Arrow 3 missile defense system sale to Germany in 2023. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will provide the Barak MX system, built to defend against aircraft and missiles. 

Central to the "Achilles Shield" architecture is a national-level command-and-control center incorporating artificial intelligence capabilities, modeled on Israel's own integrated defense network. The system is designed to enable sensors, command-and-control assets, and interceptors to communicate in real time, allowing the most appropriate defense system to be deployed against each specific threat. Approximately 12 Greek companies are expected to participate as subcontractors, with their combined involvement valued at approximately €700 million representing roughly 25% of the total project value.
