BENGALURU, India — August 3, 2026 — State-owned manufacturer BEML Limited has confirmed that India's first indigenously developed high-speed train, designated the B28, is on track for prototype completion by early 2027, marking a pivotal milestone for the country's high-speed rail ambitions and reinforcing growth momentum across the global bullet train market. The announcement underscores India's accelerating push to establish domestic manufacturing capacity for advanced rail systems, aligned with the national "Make in India" initiative.
The B28 — an acronym derived from "Bharat-made Bullet" — is being manufactured at BEML's Aditya facility in Bengaluru, which was inaugurated on April 25, 2026, by India's Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The train is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 280 km/h and will be deployed on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, India's first dedicated high-speed rail line.
Upon prototype completion, the B28 will be transferred to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL)-developed depot in Surat for a testing and trials phase expected to span four to six months. The first commercial passenger services are scheduled to commence in August 2027 on the 97-km Surat–Vapi section of the corridor.

Infrastructure Scale: The 508-km MAHSR corridor will span Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, incorporating 12 stations, 25 river bridges, 28 steel bridges, and India's first undersea railway tunnel — a 7-km underwater crossing beneath Thane Creek.
Economic Impact: The MAHSR project is projected to generate approximately 4,000 direct jobs and between 35,000 and 40,000 indirect jobs, with around 40,000 workers engaged during the construction phase.

The seven newly announced corridors alone represent a pipeline that could materially accelerate the global market's projected CAGR.
The B28 development signals a structural shift in how emerging economies approach high-speed rail — moving from technology importation toward domestic manufacturing capability. For the global bullet train market, India's trajectory introduces a new demand center that extends beyond rolling stock procurement to encompass track systems, electrification infrastructure, depot construction, and specialized workforce training.
The MAHSR corridor's use of the Full Span Launching Method for viaduct construction — applied for the first time in India — and the deployment of a J-Slab ballastless track system based on Shinkansen standards further indicate that India is building institutional and industrial knowledge that will underpin future corridor development.
