Global agribusiness giant Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art glycerine refining plant and edible oil packaging line in Lampung, Indonesia, marking a significant step in its global growth strategy.
With a production capacity of 55,000 tonnes per year, the new facility positions LDC to meet rising global demand for high-purity, USP-grade glycerine, a critical ingredient in pharmaceutical, personal care, and cosmetics industries.
The Lampung facility, strategically located near key export hubs, enhances LDC’s ability to serve both domestic and international markets. This development complements the company’s existing glycerine refining operations in Claypool, Indiana, and Wittenberg, Germany, completing its portfolio to cover all major feedstocks. The addition of an edible oil packaging line with an annual capacity of 64,800 tonnes further strengthens LDC’s position in the food-grade packaging sector, aligning with Indonesia’s ambitions to develop its downstream palm oil industry.
“This inauguration marks an important step in the development of our Food & Feed Solutions business,” said James Zhou, LDC’s global head of Food & Feed Solutions and chief commercial officer.
High-Purity Glycerine Production: The plant produces 55,000 tonnes of USP-grade glycerine annually, catering to industries driving global demand, projected to grow at a 2.5% CAGR from 2023 to 2040.
Edible Oil Packaging Line: With a capacity of 64,800 tonnes per year, the line offers diverse food-grade packaging options, capturing market opportunities for packaged edible oil exports.
Strategic Location: Positioned near key export hubs, the facility enhances LDC’s regional and global supply chain capabilities.
Synergistic Operations: The plant integrates with LDC’s existing Lampung operations, optimizing efficiency and supporting Indonesia’s role as the world’s leading glycerine producer.
The Lampung expansion reflects LDC’s commitment to addressing market trends, particularly the growing demand for refined glycerine and plant-based food products. By producing USP-grade glycerine, the facility strengthens LDC’s competitive edge in supplying high-quality ingredients to industries with stringent formulation and labeling requirements. The edible oil packaging line further diversizes revenue streams, aligning with consumer preferences for healthy, sustainable products.
The launch of the Lampung facility has garnered significant attention within the agribusiness sector, with analysts noting its alignment with Indonesia’s position as a global glycerine production hub. The facility’s ability to deliver high-purity glycerine and flexible packaging solutions positions LDC as a leader in the downstream agribusiness market. As global demand for refined glycerine continues to rise, LDC’s investment underscores its forward-thinking approach to capturing market opportunities and driving operational excellence.
LDC’s investment in Lampung reinforces its long-term commitment to Indonesia, leveraging the country’s strategic importance in the global agribusiness landscape. By expanding its downstream capabilities, LDC is not only strengthening its global supply chain but also contributing to Indonesia’s goal of advancing its palm oil and glycerine industries.
