SAN FRANCISCO, United States — August 17, 2026 — Zipline International, the U.S.-based autonomous drone delivery company, has announced a major expansion of its medical drone delivery network into Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, targeting an estimated 12 million additional people across the three nations. The move marks a significant milestone for the global Medical Drones Market, which was valued at USD 271.6 million in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 1,741.5 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 30.5%.
The company has signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with the health ministries of Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, outlining a phased rollout plan beginning with pilot programs in rural districts with limited road infrastructure. Full operations are expected to commence in early 2027.
Zipline currently operates in Rwanda, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Côte d'Ivoire, where it delivers blood products, vaccines, medications, and other critical medical supplies. The latest expansion deepens the company's footprint across Sub-Saharan Africa and reinforces its position as a leading operator in autonomous healthcare logistics.
The company plans to establish new drone distribution hubs in each of the three countries and will recruit local personnel for operations, maintenance, and logistics coordination. The expansion is projected to generate more than 500 jobs across Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique.
Geographic Reach: Zipline's network will now span eight African nations, with Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique added to its existing operational footprint.
Population Impact: The expansion is expected to extend medical drone delivery access to approximately 12 million additional people in underserved rural communities.
Operational Capability: Zipline's fixed-wing autonomous drones carry payloads of up to 1.75 kilograms, operate at speeds of up to 128 km/h, and serve delivery points within a 160-kilometer radius of distribution centers.
Delivery Milestone: Zipline has surpassed 1 million commercial deliveries to date, underscoring the scalability and reliability of its autonomous logistics platform.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, Zipline's expansion into Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique reflects a broader structural shift in healthcare logistics, where autonomous drone technology is increasingly being deployed to bridge critical last-mile delivery gaps in low-resource settings. NMSC analysts note that with the global medical drones market on a high-growth trajectory — projected to expand at a CAGR of 30.5% through 2030 — strategic partnerships between drone operators and national health ministries are expected to accelerate market penetration across emerging economies, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
Zipline's latest expansion underscores the growing role of autonomous drone technology in addressing systemic healthcare supply chain challenges across the African continent. As governments and international health organizations continue to invest in drone logistics infrastructure — a trend accelerated by supply chain vulnerabilities exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic — the medical drones sector is positioned for sustained growth.
The formalization of MOUs with national health ministries signals a maturing regulatory and institutional environment for drone-based medical delivery, which is expected to attract further investment and encourage new market entrants. With operations in eight African nations and a delivery record exceeding one million completed missions, Zipline's model is increasingly being viewed as a replicable framework for last-mile healthcare logistics in emerging markets globally.
