Motor Vehicle Parts Market: UK Output Rebounds in Sept

UK Vehicle Production Rises 36.3% in September Against Cyber-Hit Comparison, SMMT Says

LONDON, United Kingdom — October 29, 2026 — UK vehicle production rose 36.3% year on year to 74,031 units in September, according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The increase carries direct implications for the Motor Vehicle Parts Market, where original equipment demand follows factory output.

SMMT attributed the growth, the strongest since August 2022, to the comparison with September 2025, when a cyber incident halted production at Britain’s largest automotive employer. Car production rose 38.6% to 70,831 units, the strongest September for UK car manufacturing since 2023. Commercial vehicle output fell 0.9%.

The rebound has not lifted the full-year picture. UK factories built 564,537 cars and commercial vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, a decline of 3.0% year on year. An independent outlook cited by SMMT anticipates 2026 light vehicle output of 731,000 units, down 2.3% on 2025, before a recovery to 752,000 units in 2027 as new, mostly electric, models enter production.

According to the industry page, the motor vehicle parts market was valued at USD 1,305.95 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 2,091.10 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 7.0% from 2024 to 2030. The page identifies rising vehicle manufacturing as a driver of demand for components.

Key Highlights:

  • Electrified models accounted for 42.3% of UK car output in September, with production up 22.5%, and made up 70.1% of car exports.

  • Exports represented 76.7% of cars built. The EU took 57.5% of shipments, the United States 16.8% and China 4.4%.

  • SMMT cited three risks to the recovery: the European Commission’s “Made in EU” proposals, tougher rules of origin from 2027 and domestic zero-emission vehicle sales targets.

  • The industry page projects the global motor vehicle parts market to reach USD 2,091.10 billion by 2030.

Analyst Insight:

According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, vehicle assembly volumes remain a primary driver of original equipment parts demand, so a base-effect rebound such as September’s should be read alongside year-to-date output. NMSC analysts note that a rising electrified share of production shifts the component mix toward electrical and electronic parts, while the industry page also points to lower parts demand per vehicle as electric vehicle adoption widens.

Industry Outlook:

The near-term direction for UK-based parts demand depends on whether new model launches lift output in 2027 as forecast, and on how trade and regulatory measures affect export volumes. Exports account for more than three quarters of UK car production, which links component demand closely to access to European markets. The industry page projects global growth of 7.0% annually through 2030, with vehicle manufacturing volumes and the electric vehicle transition shaping regional differences.
