STOCKHOLM, Sweden September 28, 2026 Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) has entered into a global licensing agreement with Swedish drug-delivery developer Nanexa, valued at up to €1.165 billion (approximately $1.32 billion), to advance long-acting injectable platforms for its peptide-based therapeutics, marking a significant strategic development for the Drug Delivery Devices Market. The agreement underscores accelerating industry investment in controlled-release delivery technologies as pharmaceutical companies seek to extend dosing intervals for high-demand GLP-1 therapies.
The deal grants Novo Nordisk a global exclusive license to Nanexa's proprietary PharmaShell® technology a platform that encapsulates active pharmaceutical ingredients with a dense, inorganic coating applied through atomic layer deposition (ALD), a gas-phase process analogous to semiconductor manufacturing. The resulting depot dissolves gradually at the injection site, enabling controlled drug release over weeks or months.
The agreement will support up to five research and development programs targeting monthly and quarterly injection regimens, with a primary focus on Novo Nordisk's GLP-1 blockbusters for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiometabolic conditions. An initial tranche of €615 million covers an upfront payment and certain regulatory milestones, with the remaining consideration tied to commercial revenues. Nanexa will also be eligible to receive single-digit royalties on future global net sales.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the Drug Delivery Devices Market is projected to reach USD 236.63 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 7.0% from 2024 to 2030. The growing prevalence of chronic conditions including diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease continues to drive demand for advanced, patient-centric delivery systems that improve adherence and therapeutic outcomes.
Deal Value: €1.165 billion (~$1.32 billion), with an initial €615 million covering upfront payment and regulatory milestones, and the remainder contingent on revenues.
Technology: Nanexa's PharmaShell® platform uses atomic layer deposition to build nanoparticle coatings layer by layer, enabling precise control over drug release profiles spanning weeks to months.
Therapeutic Scope: Up to five R&D programs targeting monthly and quarterly injectable dosing for GLP-1-based obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiometabolic therapies.
Platform Versatility: PharmaShell® is compatible with a broad range of modalities, including peptides, biologics, monoclonal antibodies, oligonucleotides, and mRNA reinforcing its potential across multiple therapeutic areas.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, the Novo Nordisk–Nanexa agreement reflects a broader industry trend toward long-acting injectable platforms as pharmaceutical manufacturers seek to differentiate their GLP-1 portfolios beyond weekly dosing. NMSC analysts note that the integration of advanced drug-coating technologies such as atomic layer deposition into mainstream pharmaceutical development signals a maturation of the drug delivery devices sector, where precision engineering at the nanoscale is increasingly becoming a competitive differentiator. The deal's structure combining substantial upfront capital with milestone and royalty-based payments is consistent with high-conviction licensing models that validate platform technologies with broad applicability across multiple drug classes.
The Novo Nordisk–Nanexa transaction is the second major licensing agreement for PharmaShell® within a year, following a $500 million deal with Moderna in December 2025 for mRNA-based therapeutic applications. This pattern of successive high-value partnerships signals growing confidence among large pharmaceutical companies in next-generation injectable delivery platforms as a means of extending product lifecycles and improving patient compliance.
For the drug delivery devices industry, the convergence of nanotechnology, materials science, and pharmaceutical engineering is expected to accelerate the development of depot-based systems capable of monthly or quarterly dosing a shift that could meaningfully reduce the burden of chronic disease management. As regulatory frameworks adapt to accommodate novel combination products, market participants with proprietary controlled-release platforms are well-positioned to capture a disproportionate share of the sector's projected growth through 2030.
