INDIANAPOLIS, United States — October 28, 2026 — Eli Lilly and Company announced positive topline results from TRANSCEND-T2D-2, a head-to-head Phase 3 trial comparing its investigational drug retatrutide with injectable Ozempic 2 mg in adults with type 2 diabetes. The data bear on demand in the Pharmaceutical Drug Delivery Market, where diabetes and metabolic disorders form one of the largest therapeutic application segments.
At 80 weeks, retatrutide met the primary and all key secondary endpoints. Both doses lowered A1C by an average of 2.2%, against 1.8% for Ozempic. Participants taking retatrutide lost an average of 44.3 pounds (19.5%) at the 9 mg dose and 47.4 pounds (20.9%) at the 12 mg dose, compared with 20.9 pounds (9.4%) for Ozempic.
The trial enrolled 1,298 adults whose diabetes was inadequately controlled on metformin, with or without an SGLT2 inhibitor. Gastrointestinal events were the most common side effects. Diarrhea occurred in 28.3% and 32.7% of patients on the 9 mg and 12 mg doses, versus 26.4% with Ozempic. Dysesthesia occurred in 4.8% and 6.5%, versus 2.7%. Discontinuations due to adverse events were 4.8% and 7.9% with retatrutide, versus 2.7% with Ozempic.
Retatrutide is an investigational, once-weekly triple hormone receptor agonist that has not been approved by any regulator. Lilly said detailed results will be presented at a future medical meeting and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
According to the industry page, the global pharmaceutical drug delivery market was valued at USD 2.32 trillion in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 2.50 trillion in 2026. It is projected to reach USD 4.89 trillion by 2035, a compound annual growth rate of 7.8% from 2026 to 2035.
Retatrutide lowered A1C by 2.2% against 1.8% for Ozempic 2 mg at 80 weeks in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Weight loss averaged 19.5% (9 mg) and 20.9% (12 mg) with retatrutide, compared with 9.4% with Ozempic.
Retatrutide remains investigational. The release reports no regulatory approval anywhere and gives no delivery format for retatrutide beyond once-weekly dosing.
The industry page lists diabetes and metabolic disorders at USD 326.4 billion in 2025, and the injectable route as the fastest-growing primary route at an 8.6% CAGR.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, head-to-head clinical results influence which therapies advance toward approval, and that in turn shapes downstream requirements for formulation, device and fill-finish capacity. NMSC analysts note that this announcement concerns clinical performance rather than a new delivery technology, so any effect on the delivery market depends on regulatory outcomes and the commercial format chosen.
The industry page identifies the expanding biologics pipeline, chronic disease prevalence and home self-administration as principal demand drivers, and it projects delivery devices as the fastest-growing product type at a 9.2% CAGR through 2035. Whether retatrutide contributes to these segments will depend on regulatory review and the formulation and device configuration of any approved product. Further data from the TRANSCEND-T2D program, and from Lilly’s ongoing TRIUMPH-5 comparison with tirzepatide, will inform the competitive picture.
