As preparations intensify for Donald Trump’s second state visit to the United Kingdom, Thames Valley Police have confirmed a major security operation featuring round-the-clock drone surveillance over Windsor.
King Charles will host the US president and First Lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle from 17 to 19 September, with ceremonial welcomes and a state banquet planned. To ensure uninterrupted coverage, drones will patrol the skies while a temporary airspace restriction—effective from 16 to 18 September—prevents non-police drones and small aircraft from entering the protected zone.
“This is a significant policing operation for us,” said Ch Insp Matthew Wilkinson of Thames Valley Police’s joint operations unit. “However, Thames Valley Police is proud to host these events and we have a good history of putting on these events for both the royal family and the country.”
Restricted Airspace from 16–18 September, covering both the rehearsal and state visit.
Drone Fleet in Rotation, with each unit flying up to 120 metres (400 ft) for 30 minutes before being replaced.
Continuous Coverage, ensuring “eye in the sky” surveillance without service gaps.
According to Wilkinson, the drone operation is “one of the larger ones,” comparable to the force’s approach at other high-profile events.
Alongside the aerial security measures, significant public demonstrations are planned. The Stop Trump Coalition will hold a mass protest in central London on the first day of the trip, with an additional protest staged near Windsor Castle.
The scale of the policing response reflects the anticipated turnout and the political backdrop. Trump’s first UK visit in 2019 drew thousands of demonstrators onto London’s streets in opposition.
Validation of Technology: Drones were central to security at Trump’s UK state visit, proving their reliability for high-profile law enforcement operations.
Market Boost for Enterprise Drones: Use of models like the DJI Matrice 30T highlights demand for enterprise-grade drones with thermal and long-duration capabilities.
Regulatory Momentum: Temporary airspace restrictions demonstrate how drone use drives new rules, benefiting airspace management and counter-drone technology providers.
Growth of Public Safety Segment: This event positions drones as core policing infrastructure, accelerating adoption across Europe and strengthening the public safety drone market.
