University of Ottawa Unveils AI That Reads Smartwatch Signals to Detect Distress Before Users Ask 

Ottawa, Canada — June 29, 2026 — Researchers at the University of Ottawa have developed an artificial intelligence assistant, called UbiMyTherapist, that reads physiological signals from smartwatches, smartphones, and earbuds to detect emotional distress and offer mental health support before a user initiates contact, marking a notable shift toward proactive, wearable-driven health monitoring. 

Main Development 

The system analyzes signals such as heart rate variability, changes in speech tone, and written text to assess a user's emotional state. It then constructs a "digital twin," combining the individual's medical and psychological history with live emotional data to deliver personalized responses rather than generic chatbot replies. 

UbiMyTherapist operates in two modes: a reactive mode that responds when a user reaches out, and a proactive mode that monitors distress through live signals and intervenes before contact is initiated. The reactive mode was evaluated with 24 participants, and licensed therapists assessed its therapeutic soundness. The university reported the system scored well on empathy and personalization compared with standard large language model setups. 

The researchers stated the tool is not intended to replace human therapy but to extend support beyond clinics for individuals facing barriers such as cost, stigma, or limited access. The team plans to refine the prototype to respond in real time to smartwatch signals and is working with licensed therapists to ensure clinical accuracy.
