Tobacco Production — Tobacco production refers to the total quantity of raw, unmanufactured tobacco leaves harvested from tobacco crops within a country or region during a specific year, generally measured in tonnes. It represents the agricultural output generated through the cultivation, growth, and harvesting of tobacco plants for commercial use. This macro indicator tracks changes in tobacco farming activities, production volumes, cultivation practices, harvested area, and yield performance over time, providing insights into the scale and trends of tobacco crop production across different regions.
Production recovered significantly in 2017, reaching 181.142 thousand tonnes, and increased further to 195.482 thousand tonnes in 2018. In 2019, tobacco production rose sharply to 269.80347 thousand tonnes, followed by a slight decrease to 261.017 thousand tonnes in 2020. Production declined again in 2021, reaching 245.338 thousand tonnes, and decreased to 221.92505 thousand tonnes in 2022. However, output recovered strongly in 2023, reaching 286.51 thousand tonnes, and increased further to 353.386 thousand tonnes in 2024, representing the highest production level during the period. Indonesia has a long history of tobacco cultivation, with production concentrated mainly in regions such as East Java, Central Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and other agricultural areas. The country produces various tobacco varieties used for cigarette manufacturing, particularly for traditional kretek cigarettes, which are an important part of Indonesia’s tobacco industry. The growth in production reflects strong domestic demand, expanded cultivation activities, and improved farming techniques. However, the sector faces challenges from tobacco control policies, environmental concerns, and changing consumer behavior. Despite these challenges, tobacco farming remains an important source of income for many rural communities. The 2015–2024 production trend highlights Indonesia’s increasing role as one of Asia’s major tobacco producers and demonstrates the continued importance of tobacco cultivation within its agricultural economy.
