Coconut Production — – Coconut Production refers to the total quantity of coconuts harvested and produced within a country during a specified period, measured in tonnes. The indicator reflects the scale of coconut cultivation, agricultural productivity, and the contribution of coconut farming to the agricultural sector. It is used to assess production capacity, food supply availability, and the role of coconut cultivation in domestic and international agricultural markets. The data presented by Our World in Data is based on statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Measured in Million Tonnes, the dataset serves as an important benchmark for evaluating coconut cultivation capacity, agricultural productivity, crop output, supply chain performance, and the overall development of Sri Lanka’s coconut industry. Based on the validated data, Sri Lanka’s coconut production experienced considerable fluctuations throughout the study period, reflecting variations in annual agricultural output. Production started at 2.44 million tonnes in 2015 and declined slightly to 2.41 million tonnes in 2016. Output decreased significantly to 1.96 million tonnes in 2017, representing the lowest production level during the period. Production recovered to 2.10 million tonnes in 2018 and increased further to 2.47 million tonnes in 2019. Coconut output declined to 2.23 million tonnes in 2020 before reaching the highest production level of 2.50 million tonnes in 2021. Production decreased again to 2.20 million tonnes in 2022, followed by further declines to 2.06 million tonnes in 2023 and 1.81 million tonnes in 2024. The overall trend indicates significant year-to-year volatility, with production ending below the initial 2015 level.
The dataset provides valuable insights into Sri Lanka’s coconut production trends, agricultural variability, and industry challenges. It enables year-over-year production analysis, benchmarking against other coconut-producing nations, and evaluation of long-term supply changes. The data can support policymakers, farmers, processors, exporters, investors, and researchers in assessing production performance, forecasting future output, improving cultivation practices, and strengthening coconut-based industries. It also supports strategic planning related to export development, food processing, rural livelihoods, and sustainable agricultural management.
