India's Assam Tea Sector Warns of Output Crisis as Drought Slashes June Production by 12% 

GUWAHATI, India — July 24, 2026 — India's Assam tea industry, one of the world's oldest and most significant tea-producing regions, is confronting a severe production crisis driven by drought-like conditions, with output declining 12% in June as abnormally high temperatures and a 50% reduction in seasonal rainfall continue to devastate tea gardens across the state.

The chairman of Bharatiya Cha Parishad, Sarvesh Saharia, issued a stark warning, stating: "If current conditions persist, we're looking at one of the most challenging years in recent memory for Assam's tea industry." 

The production shortfall is not confined to a single district. Tea-growing regions including Dibrugarh, Doomdooma, Panitola, and Tengakhat have all reported significantly reduced crop yields, with tea leaves in Dibrugarh turning black due to extreme weather stress. The harsh, dry conditions have simultaneously created ideal breeding environments for red spider mites, which are inflicting additional and widespread damage across tea gardens. 

Industry observers note that the compounding effect of heat stress, water scarcity, and pest infestation poses a systemic risk to India's tea export pipeline at a time when the global tea market, is projected to reach USD 104.21 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 5.7%. 

The crisis arrives against a broader backdrop of global agricultural stress, with extreme weather events reducing crop yields across multiple commodities worldwide. Analysts warn that reduced tea leaf volumes will translate into tighter supply on retail shelves, upward pressure on consumer prices, and a significant decline in farm-level income — outcomes that could accelerate farm closures and further constrain future supply.

The analysts further emphasize that accelerating investment in climate-resilient agricultural technologies and irrigation infrastructure will be critical to safeguarding production continuity in India's tea belt. 

Industry Outlook: 

The Assam tea crisis is expected to reverberate across global supply chains in the near term, with potential price increases for consumers and reduced export volumes from India — the world's second-largest tea producer. Scientists and agri-tech firms are actively developing precision farming tools, including soil moisture monitoring systems and crop cooling technologies, which may offer medium-term relief. However, industry stakeholders and policymakers face mounting pressure to implement immediate interventions — including minimum sustainable price (MSP) mechanisms and export incentive frameworks — to stabilize the sector and protect the livelihoods of millions of tea garden workers dependent on Assam's two-century-old industry.
