Autonomous Ships Market Growth Driven by AI Navigation Trials

Autonomous Ships Market Size to Hit USD 10.74 Billion by 2030 as Singapore Port Trials and Samsung-Orca AI Pact Accelerate Maritime Autonomy

A coordinated wave of real-world autonomous maritime deployments has intensified industry momentum after the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, NYK, and MTI completed live operational trials involving autonomous-capable vessel systems at the Port of Singapore, while Orca AI and Samsung Heavy Industries signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding on 29 April 2026 to scale AI-driven navigation and ship autonomy technologies across global fleets. These back-to-back developments are reinforcing commercial and regulatory alignment in maritime automation, with the global Autonomous Ships Market valued at USD 6.57 billion in 2019 and projected to reach USD 10.74 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2020–2030.

The simultaneous emergence of port-side operational validation and shipbuilder-led AI integration marks a structural shift in how autonomous vessel systems are transitioning from pilot programs to integrated commercial ecosystems.

Singapore Trials Validate Real-Time Integration of Autonomous Ship Systems

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), in collaboration with NYK and MTI, conducted autonomous ship interface trials on 29 April 2026 using NYK’s Elder Leader, a 200-metre LNG-fuelled car carrier designed with autonomous-capable systems, during its maiden call at the Port of Singapore.

According to MPA, the trials focused on how onboard autonomous technologies interact with shore-based infrastructure while maintaining full crew oversight. The exercises included integration with MPA’s Just-in-Time (JIT) platform, transmission of voyage data to the Next-Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS), and remote pilotage simulations involving live communication between vessel and shore control centers.

MPA stated that the trials provide critical operational insights into how Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) can safely function in high-density port environments, while informing the continued development of digital traffic management and remote navigation systems.

Orca AI–Samsung Heavy Industries Pact Pushes Ship-Level Autonomy

On 29 April 2026, maritime AI firm Orca AI signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to accelerate the development and commercial scaling of autonomous vessel technologies.

The phased collaboration will integrate SHI’s SVISION berthing assistance system and autonomous speed optimization tools into Orca AI’s maritime AI platform, while SHI will embed Orca AI’s navigation intelligence systems into its Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) newbuild vessels.

Accelerating Ship Autonomy with Orca AI and SHI

Orca AI, which already operates across 1,200 deployed vessels with over 500 additional vessels in its pipeline, will expand its AI-powered situational awareness systems—such as its SeaPod lookout assistant and FleetView fleet analytics platform—into both existing fleets and newly constructed vessels.

According to Yarden Gross, CEO and Co-Founder of Orca AI, the partnership creates a scalable pathway for autonomous navigation deployment across operational fleets and newbuild programs, enabling real-time decision support and adaptive navigation at industrial scale.

Meanwhile, SHI emphasized that AI-based autonomous navigation is becoming a core competitive differentiator in the global shipbuilding industry, with the collaboration enabling commercialization of integrated autonomous systems across vessel categories.

Market Analysis: Structural Shift From Pilots to Scaled Deployment

The convergence of port-level validation in Singapore and shipbuilder-led AI integration signals a transition phase in maritime autonomy, where infrastructure readiness and vessel intelligence are evolving in parallel.

According to NMSC analysis, autonomous shipping adoption is being driven by three structural forces: regulatory sandboxing in major ports, shipyard-level integration of AI systems, and rising demand for fuel efficiency and crew optimization in global trade routes.

Strategic Implications for Industry Stakeholders

  • Shipbuilders are expected to accelerate AI-native vessel design integration, shifting autonomy from add-on systems to embedded infrastructure.

  • Port authorities may expand digital twin traffic management systems to support autonomous vessel navigation at scale.

  • Maritime operators are likely to prioritize fleet-wide AI adoption to optimize fuel usage, safety compliance, and crew allocation.

  • Technology providers will increasingly compete on real-time decision intelligence and interoperability standards across vessel ecosystems.

Conclusion

The simultaneous advancement of autonomous vessel trials in Singapore and AI-shipbuilder integration agreements reflects a clear inflection point in maritime automation. With commercial deployment now aligning with regulatory testing environments, the Autonomous Ships Market is moving toward structured, scalable adoption rather than isolated pilot experimentation.
