IN-SPACe announced that Bengaluru-based Astrome Technologies and Hyderabad-based Azista Industries and Dhruva Space were selected under its Satellite Bus as a Service (SBaaS) initiative. Each company will receive ₹5 crore in milestone-linked support to develop modular and scalable Satellite Bus Market platforms for hosted payload missions.
The contracts were formally signed in February 2026 following a competitive selection process that reviewed 15 proposals. The programme aims to provide ready-to-use spacecraft platforms for customers that want to deploy payloads without developing a full satellite independently. This reduces cost, shortens mission timelines and lowers barriers for startups, universities and international clients.
India’s private space industry received a major policy boost after the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) selected three companies to develop indigenous small satellite bus platforms. The decision marks a significant shift in the country’s commercial space ambitions, as satellite buses form the technological backbone of modern spacecraft by supporting power, propulsion, communication, thermal control and navigation systems.
The announcement is important because it signals India’s intent to move beyond launch services and strengthen its presence in end-to-end satellite manufacturing. At Next Move Strategy Consulting, we view this as a strategic step that can help domestic firms capture more value from the rapidly expanding global small satellite economy.
The SBaaS initiative was launched in April 2025 through an official call for proposals. IN-SPACe designed the scheme to support Indian non-government entities capable of developing commercially viable satellite platforms. By selecting three companies with different technical strengths, the regulator appears focused on creating a diversified industrial base rather than a single supplier model.
According to IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka, the programme is intended to help India become a preferred global destination for small satellite manufacturing, launch and hosted payload services. We believe this reflects a broader national strategy to expand India’s role across the full commercial space value chain.

Astrome Technologies is recognised for advanced communication technologies, making it relevant for future broadband and connectivity missions. Azista Industries has highlighted multi-mission platform capabilities and imaging expertise, while Dhruva Space has established itself in integrated space systems, deployers and mission support services.
At Next Move Strategy Consulting, we observe that selecting companies with varied capabilities improves India’s chances of serving multiple customer segments. Instead of one standard offering, the market could see platforms tailored for Earth observation, telecommunications, defence applications and in-orbit demonstrations.
India’s commercial space ecosystem is gaining momentum as IN-SPACe selects Astrome Technologies, Azista Industries and Dhruva Space to build indigenous satellite bus platforms under the SBaaS initiative. With ₹5 crore allocated to each company, the programme aims to accelerate modular spacecraft production, lower mission costs and support hosted payload services. The initiative is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract private investment and position India as a competitive global hub for end-to-end small satellite design, launch and mission support.

The most important long-term outcome of the programme may be the rise of platform-based satellite economics in India. Instead of building every mission from scratch, reusable spacecraft buses can support multiple payload types with faster deployment cycles. This can significantly improve margins and reduce engineering costs over time.
The initiative may also strengthen India’s domestic supply chain. More satellite bus production can create demand for avionics, propulsion modules, software, solar systems, clean-room facilities and testing infrastructure. That broader industrial effect could generate opportunities well beyond the three selected firms.
Another major benefit is export potential. India already has a strong reputation for cost-effective launches. If it can combine spacecraft manufacturing with launch and mission support services, the country may become more attractive to overseas customers seeking integrated and affordable space solutions.
At Next Move Strategy Consulting, we believe the financial grant itself is only one part of the story. The larger value lies in regulatory backing, infrastructure access, technical support and future mission opportunities. Those factors can attract private investment and accelerate commercial readiness.
We also note that credibility is critical in the space sector. Once Indian satellite buses gain flight heritage through successful missions, they can compete more effectively in international markets where reliability and proven performance are essential purchasing criteria.
Space startups should consider building payload technologies that can integrate with modular satellite buses rather than developing full spacecraft independently. This can reduce capital requirements and shorten time to market.
Investors may find emerging opportunities in component manufacturing, onboard software, propulsion systems and satellite testing services. These adjacent segments often benefit when platform manufacturing scales.
Global customers and governments should monitor India’s evolving commercial space ecosystem as new partnerships, sourcing options and mission models emerge from programmes like SBaaS.
IN-SPACe’s decision to back Astrome, Azista and Dhruva Space represents an important milestone for India’s private space sector. By supporting indigenous satellite bus development, the country is building capabilities that extend beyond launches into spacecraft platforms and hosted payload services.
At Next Move Strategy Consulting, we see this as a foundation-building move that could help India emerge as a competitive global hub for small satellite solutions in the years ahead.
