A series of 2026 breakthroughs in carbon nanotube (CNT) research—ranging from record-high nonlinear optical responses in chiral CNT films to copper-level conductivity in scalable CNT fibers—has intensified global interest in next-generation nanomaterials for electronics, photonics, and electrified transport systems.
These developments are reshaping commercial expectations across semiconductor, aerospace, and energy sectors. Latest Next Move Strategy Consulting (NMSC) data projects the global Carbon Nanotubes Market will reach USD 7.11 billion by 2030, expanding steadily as industrial applications move closer to mass deployment.
Researchers at Rice University have demonstrated a giant second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect in highly ordered chiral carbon nanotube films, confirming a decades-old theoretical prediction.
The study, published in ACS Nano, shows that aligned single-handed CNT crystals can convert light frequencies at a rate two to three orders of magnitude higher than conventional materials, enabling ultra-efficient optical transformations critical for photonic computing and communications.
According to Jayanta Das, Senior Research Analyst at Next Move Strategy Consulting, “this discovery resolves a long-standing bottleneck in nonlinear optics and positions chiral CNTs as a foundational material for next-generation optical computing architectures.”
In a parallel development, researchers from IMDEA Materials Institute and partner institutions have developed intercalated CNT fibers with conductivity approaching copper and aluminum, while being significantly lighter.
Published in Science, the study demonstrates CNT fibers achieving conductivity up to 24.5 MS/m, roughly half of copper but at a fraction of its weight, making them highly attractive for aerospace and electric mobility applications.
Researchers achieved this through AlCl₄⁻ gas-phase intercalation doping, increasing conductivity more than 17-fold while preserving structural integrity.
