BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom — October 23, 2026 — Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to enter Germany’s pickup segment with its Shark DMO plug-in hybrid, extending competition into a vehicle category dominated by established manufacturers. The planned launch highlights the expanding European presence of Chinese electric vehicle brands in Europe as automakers seek opportunities across additional vehicle segments.
According to a report published by WELT on October 23, BYD’s Shark DMO is expected to reach Germany in the first quarter of 2027. The vehicle combines two electric motors with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering a reported system output of 436 horsepower.
The pickup features a 32.2-kWh battery and an electric-only driving range of approximately 90 kilometres. Its introduction places BYD in direct competition with established models, particularly the Ford Ranger, which has a strong position in Germany’s pickup market.
Germany remains a relatively small market for pickups. WELT reported that approximately 21,000 new pickups were registered in the country in 2025, accounting for less than 1% of the overall vehicle market. The report also highlighted the importance of payload capacity, towing performance and an established dealer network in competing for commercial customers.
BYD’s entry therefore represents a targeted expansion into a specialised segment rather than a direct measure of the company's overall electric-car sales in Europe. The Shark DMO is a plug-in hybrid, not a fully battery-electric vehicle, making the distinction important when assessing its relevance to the broader electric vehicle industry.
European expansion: BYD is preparing to introduce the Shark DMO in Germany in the first quarter of 2027.
Electrified powertrain: The plug-in hybrid combines two electric motors with a petrol engine, producing a reported 436 horsepower.
Battery and range: The 32.2-kWh battery supports an electric-only range of approximately 90 kilometres.
Competitive considerations: Payload capacity, towing requirements and after-sales support will be important factors in determining the vehicle’s appeal to German commercial and private buyers.
According to an industry assessment by Next Move Strategy Consulting, Chinese automakers’ entry into additional European vehicle segments could broaden competitive pressure beyond conventional passenger cars. Products designed for specialised applications offer manufacturers another route to build market presence, although their commercial performance will depend on segment-specific customer requirements.
NMSC analysts note that electrification alone may not secure a competitive advantage in the commercial vehicle market. Payload, operating costs, vehicle reliability and access to servicing infrastructure remain important factors influencing purchasing decisions, particularly among fleet operators.
BYD’s planned German launch will provide an indication of how effectively Chinese automakers can expand into specialised European vehicle categories. The pickup’s performance against established competitors will depend on customer acceptance, practical utility and the development of a reliable sales and service network.
More broadly, the introduction reflects the increasing range of electrified vehicles available to European buyers. As new entrants broaden their product portfolios, competition across vehicle segments is likely to depend on a combination of technology, operating capability, distribution and customer confidence.
