LOS ANGELES, United States — August 3, 2026 — Registered nurses represented by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU) held a press conference and rally today at California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) in Los Angeles to protest planned workforce reductions by CommonSpirit Health across 17 hospitals in California. The action underscores mounting staffing pressures within the global hospital market, which is projected to reach USD 10.29 trillion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.7%.
More than 175 healthcare staff across CommonSpirit Health facilities in California — spanning locations from Long Beach to Mount Shasta — have received layoff notices. At CHMC alone, CommonSpirit has proposed eliminating 82 positions, including all nurses in the pediatric unit, raising immediate concerns about continuity of care in an already understaffed facility.
The majority of the proposed cuts target ancillary staff roles, including patient transporters, physical therapy aides, occupational therapy aides, telemetry technicians, unit assistants, clerks, and unit secretaries. Nursing positions — including nurse educators, wound care specialists, and pediatric registered nurses — have also been affected, compounding concerns about patient safety and care quality.
CNA/NNU, which represents more than 17,000 nurses at 33 CommonSpirit Health facilities nationwide and more than 800 nurses at CHMC alone, has called on CommonSpirit to immediately rescind all layoff notices. "CommonSpirit is putting profits before patients," said CNA President Sandy Reding, RN, at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. "As one of the biggest nonprofit Catholic health care systems, they can afford to invest in health care staffing."
Scale of Cuts: More than 175 healthcare staff across 17 CommonSpirit Health hospitals in California have received layoff notices, with 82 positions targeted at California Hospital Medical Center alone.
Patient Care Risk: The elimination of ancillary staff is expected to shift non-nursing duties onto registered nurses, reducing direct bedside care time and increasing the risk of delays in patient treatment.
Pediatric Unit Impact: All pediatric unit nurses at CHMC are among those facing layoff notices, raising concerns about the continuity of specialized pediatric care in Los Angeles.
Workforce Representation: CNA/NNU represents more than 225,000 registered nurses nationwide, making today's protest a significant signal of broader labor tensions within the U.S. hospital sector.
According to analysts at Next Move Strategy Consulting, workforce stability is a critical determinant of hospital market performance, particularly as the global sector navigates a projected expansion from USD 7.39 trillion in 2024 to USD 10.29 trillion by 2030. NMSC analysts note that large-scale staffing reductions at major health systems such as CommonSpirit Health — one of the largest nonprofit Catholic health systems in the United States — could adversely affect patient throughput, quality metrics, and long-term institutional reputation, factors that directly influence market competitiveness and investor confidence in the hospital sector.
The CommonSpirit Health layoffs in California reflect a broader tension within the U.S. hospital market between cost containment imperatives and the operational demands of delivering quality patient care. As hospitals face rising operational costs, payer mix pressures, and post-pandemic workforce fatigue, staffing decisions are increasingly becoming a flashpoint for labor action and regulatory scrutiny.
The global hospital market's projected growth trajectory — driven by an aging population, rising chronic disease prevalence, and expanding government investment in healthcare infrastructure — will depend significantly on the ability of health systems to maintain adequate staffing levels. Workforce shortfalls, if left unaddressed, risk undermining the capacity expansions and service quality improvements that underpin long-term market growth. Regulatory bodies and hospital administrators are expected to face increasing pressure to establish sustainable staffing frameworks that balance fiscal discipline with patient safety obligations.
