The global roofing tiles market is witnessing accelerated industrial transformation after wienerberger UK & Ireland began construction of the world’s first fully electric tunnel kiln for clay roof tile manufacturing at its Broomfleet facility in East Yorkshire. The project marks a significant shift toward low-carbon manufacturing in the construction materials sector as governments and manufacturers intensify efforts to decarbonize heavy industry operations.
The electric kiln initiative, announced on May 21, 2026, is expected to reduce Scope 1 carbon emissions from the Broomfleet production line by 75%, eliminating nearly 4,700 tonnes of CO₂ annually through the replacement of conventional gas-fired systems with renewable-powered electrification technology. According to the latest proprietary dataset from Next Move Strategy Consulting (NMSC), the Roofing Tiles Market was valued at USD 29.87 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 46.97 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 4.2% from 2020 to 2030.
Industry analysts said the development represents a major milestone for the roofing and construction materials industry, where manufacturers are increasingly investing in decarbonized production systems amid rising environmental regulations and sustainability mandates.
The £37 million Factory e project received £4.3 million in funding support from the UK Government’s Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF), which focuses on accelerating industrial fuel-switching and energy-efficiency technologies across hard-to-abate sectors.
Jayanta Das, Senior Research Analyst at Next Move Strategy Consulting, notes that electrification of industrial kiln systems could become a defining competitive differentiator within the roofing materials industry over the next decade.
“Heavy clay manufacturing has historically been one of the more carbon-intensive segments within construction materials. The transition toward fully electric kiln systems signals a broader structural shift in industrial manufacturing, where operational sustainability is becoming equally important as production efficiency and product durability,” Das stated.
The Broomfleet Factory e initiative will replace traditional natural gas-fired roof tile manufacturing with a 100% electric tunnel kiln powered through renewable energy sources. The project is expected to become operational in 2027 following extensive civil engineering, automation integration, and workforce upskilling programs currently underway at the facility.
According to wienerberger UK & Ireland, the electrified production line will manufacture plain roof tiles and related accessories while maintaining existing product quality standards through advanced process controls and automation systems.
Keith Barker, Chief Operating Officer at wienerberger UK & Ireland, described the project as a “pivotal step” in the company’s long-term decarbonization strategy for heavy clay manufacturing.
Mark Brook, Operations Director at wienerberger UK & Ireland, added that the project integrates advanced automation and operational technologies designed to improve manufacturing consistency, workforce safety, and production efficiency.
Analysts noted that the roofing tiles industry is increasingly moving toward advanced manufacturing technologies that combine emissions reduction with operational modernization.
The latest industrial decarbonization milestone follows growing momentum around integrated renewable energy systems within residential roofing infrastructure. Recently, Russell Roof Tiles partnered with solar specialist Solfit to support deployment of roof-integrated solar systems across UK housing developments ahead of the Future Homes Standard implementation.
The collaboration highlighted growing demand for roofing systems capable of supporting integrated solar infrastructure while maintaining structural performance and fire safety compliance.
Solfit’s integrated in-roof solar system utilizes panel-level microinverter technology and an all-metal mounting architecture intended to improve fire safety and long-term durability compared to conventional rooftop solar systems.
Industry observers said the combination of low-carbon manufacturing and energy-generating roofing systems reflects a broader convergence between sustainability, renewable energy, and construction materials innovation.
