As the holiday season approaches, the Columbus Civic Center working with Keep Columbus Beautiful and The Community Warriors has opened a Thanksgiving food drive to support local families. The drive will collect donations through Nov. 14, with all contributions directed to Feeding the Valley for distribution to area households in need.
Organizers emphasized that small items add up: “Every can, box, or frozen item makes a difference,” they said when announcing the drive. Among the items specifically requested, frozen vegetables, family frozen meals and other frozen goods were listed alongside canned and boxed staples. Frozen turkeys and hams were identified as the most-needed frozen items.
Canned goods: soups, vegetables, fruits and beans.
Boxed foods: stuffing, rice, pasta and cereal.
Frozen items: frozen vegetables, family meals, frozen turkeys and hams. All donations must be sealed and within their expiration dates.
Donors may bring items to the Columbus Civic Center at 400 4th Street. Donations are being accepted daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 14; contributors can leave goods at the administration office (left side of the building) or at the box office.
The prominence of frozen vegetables and other frozen goods on the drive’s list highlights the practical role frozen foods play in community food assistance: they offer convenience, longer shelf life, and can form the base of a family meal.
Organizations coordinating holiday drives that explicitly request frozen items may improve the variety and nutritional balance of distributed food packages, while ensuring donated goods meet storage and safety requirements (sealed and unexpired).
