General Atomics Expands MQ-9B Drone Production Globally

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is strengthening its global military drone manufacturing footprint through a new co-production initiative in the United Arab Emirates, reflecting rising international demand for advanced unmanned aerial systems. The move aligns with the UAE’s broader strategy to expand its indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities while supporting allied defense modernization programs.

Strategic Co-Production in the UAE

GA-ASI has signed a memorandum of understanding with Calidus Aerospace to collaborate on the production of key unmanned platforms, including the MQ-9B Sky Guardian and Sea Guardian drones, as well as the Gambit Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). The agreement was formalized during UMEX and Sim TEX 2026, held from January 20 to 22.

Under the agreement, both parties will explore collaboration across multiple stages of production, including airframe manufacturing, final assembly, testing, checkout, and flight operational test and acceptance. While the precise scale of production in the UAE has not been disclosed, the initiative marks the first time General Atomics will manufacture its drones in the Middle East.

Advanced Platforms for ISR and Combat Roles

The MQ-9B Sky Guardian is a long-endurance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform capable of operating for more than 40 hours, enabling persistent monitoring across vast operational areas. Complementing this capability, the Gambit CCA is designed as a loyal wingman aircraft, intended to operate alongside crewed fighter jets in combat scenarios.

Together, these platforms represent a combination of endurance, interoperability, and operational flexibility, supporting both surveillance missions and evolving combat concepts.

Strengthening the UAE’s Unmanned Systems Ecosystem

For the UAE, the partnership reflects continued momentum in building a domestic military drone industry. According to Calidus CEO Dr. Khalifa Murad Alblooshi, the agreement represents a strategic step toward strengthening capabilities in unmanned systems in line with user requirements. The initiative also mirrors broader regional efforts to position the UAE as a hub for advanced defense manufacturing.

Parallel Expansion in Europe

In parallel with developments in the Middle East, General Atomics is also expanding its presence in Europe. Germany has agreed to purchase eight MQ-9B Sea Guardian aircraft through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, with the first delivery expected in 2028. These aircraft are intended to enhance Germany’s ISR capabilities and are interoperable with its P-8A maritime patrol fleet, with an option to add anti-submarine warfare capability.

Germany’s procurement comes amid a wider rearmament phase and an urgent requirement for advanced combat drones. General Atomics has also announced plans to manufacture a variant of its YFQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft in Germany, reflecting a growing trend of localized production partnerships.
