Industry developments in 2024 and early 2025 highlight a shift toward electrified and connected hydraulic systems showcased at Bauma 2025, with Bosch Rexroth introducing BODAS Studio for streamlined code generation and HydraForce-integrated hardware for automated construction machinery. In the United States, robust infrastructure spending under the Biden Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has driven demand for off-highway equipment, with United Rentals reporting a 6% revenue increase in Q1 2024 on higher equipment demand and record backlog growth.
Hydraulic cylinders remain critical in:
Construction & Mining: Excavators, loaders, cranes, benefiting from precision and load capacity.
Agriculture: Tractors and harvesters, where cylinders control plows and arms.
Automotive & Transportation: Braking systems, suspension, and material‐handling trucks.
Aerospace & Defense: Actuation for landing gear and flight controls.
Industrial Automation: Presses, injection molding, and robotics.
Hydraulic cylinder assemblies typically include:
Cylinder Barrel: High-strength steel tube housing.
Piston & Rod: Converts fluid pressure into linear force.
Seals & Wipers: Prevent fluid leakage and contamination.
End Caps & Mounts: Provide structural support and mounting interfaces.

"While investors may have been searching for an aerospace deal based on the high-growth potential in the end market, we believe the Curtis acquisition could serve a similar purpose in aligning the company's sales mix further toward secular growth theme," Jefferies analyst Stephen Volkmann wrote in a note.
The Cleveland, Ohio-based Parker-Hannifin also makes airframe and engine components and aftermarket parts for the commercial aerospace and defense markets; it counts Boeing and Airbus among its customers. Sales in the aerospace segment rose 11.6% to $1.57 billion in the third-quarter ended March 31.
Looking ahead, the hydraulic cylinders market is poised for:
Electrification & Hybrid Systems: Integration with electric actuators for mobile equipment.
Smart Sensors & IIoT: Real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, as illustrated by Hydreco’s eLYNX.
Sustainability: Development of biodegradable fluids and energy-recovery accumulators.
Customization & Additive Manufacturing: Tailored cylinder designs via 3D-printed components for lighter weight and rapid prototyping.
For example, Caterpillar’s recent pilot of smart hydraulic excavators with onboard diagnostics demonstrates the trend toward connected components, while John Deere’s electrified tractor prototypes showcase the shift to hybrid powertrains.
