Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Inc., in collaboration with Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., has installed the world’s first vending machine powered by a hydrogen cartridge at the EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan site. With the event set to open in about a month, an installation ceremony took place on March 18 to mark the milestone.
The new vending machines have a slightly larger footprint due to an added generator module on the side. This module houses the hydrogen cartridges and facilitates the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing electricity that is stored in a battery.
A total of 58 of these vending machines will be installed at the Expo, each equipped with an informational display to educate visitors about the workings of hydrogen power.
Key Features of the Hydrogen-Powered Vending Machine at EXPO 2025
Comprises a standard vending unit and a generator equipped with a hydrogen cartridge
Operates independently using electricity produced through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen
Capable of generating power in any location or weather condition
Produces zero CO₂ emissions during operation
Equipped with a monitor that visualizes the power generation process

The vending machine is fully compatible with Coca-Cola’s official app, Coke ON®. The app enhances user accessibility by providing on-screen visual information, tactile feedback through smartphone vibrations, and voice-guided auditory support to assist users during the purchasing process.
