Japan’s electric shaver industry is entering a new competitive phase after Panasonic unveiled its new “The Barikan” professional clipper series and Philips introduced its AI-powered i9000 Shaver lineup, intensifying innovation across premium grooming technologies. According to the latest analysis from Next Move Strategy Consulting, the Japan Electric Shaver Market size was valued at USD 1.21 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 1.52 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 3.4% from 2025 to 2030.
The latest product launches signal a broader transformation in Japan’s grooming electronics sector, where manufacturers are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence, ergonomic engineering, high-speed motors, and precision blade technologies to target both professional barbers and premium personal grooming consumers.
Panasonic’s July 2025 launch of “The Barikan” marked a strategic expansion of its professional barber-focused portfolio as the company seeks stronger penetration across the United States, Asia, and Europe. The first product in the series, the ER-XT70 professional T-shaped trimmer, is designed to enhance fade styling precision and ease of use for professional hair practitioners.
According to Panasonic, the company has spent over four decades developing professional hair clipper technologies by leveraging engineering capabilities originally refined through its electric shaver business. The company stated that its products currently maintain strong market positions across Japan and several European markets including Germany, France, and Italy.
“The professional grooming segment is rapidly evolving beyond basic trimming tools toward precision-engineered lifestyle devices,” said Aarav Malhotra, Lead Analyst at Next Move Strategy Consulting. “Manufacturers are now competing on ergonomic performance, portability, blade durability, and intelligent grooming functionality rather than only shaving efficiency.”
Panasonic’s newly introduced ER-XT70 incorporates originally developed 45-degree angled blades alongside a high-speed motor system intended to improve cutting performance for thick hair textures. The slim-neck trimmer design also targets increased visibility and accuracy around difficult styling areas including the forehead, neckline, and ear contours.
The company is simultaneously using barber culture as a global branding strategy. Panasonic recently partnered with Japanese barber brand MR.BROTHERS CUT CLUB and joined a barber training initiative in Ghana aimed at promoting international barber culture while creating youth employment opportunities.
Industry analysts note that Panasonic’s efforts reflect a larger trend where grooming appliance manufacturers are positioning barber culture and premium styling as lifestyle ecosystems rather than standalone product categories.
Meanwhile, Royal Philips accelerated competition in the premium rotary shaving segment through the launch of its i9000, i9000 Prestige, and i9000 Prestige Ultra product lineup in April 2025.
The new shaver series integrates AI-powered personalization technologies including real-time motion guidance, adaptive beard-density sensors, pressure optimization systems, and app-connected skin analysis tools.
Philips stated that its i9000 Prestige Ultra features SkinIQ PRO technology capable of tracking skin conditions across 10 metrics while adjusting shaving performance based on user behavior and facial contours. The device also includes UV-powered hygienic charging technology and durability features designed for up to seven years of operational lifespan.
According to the latest NMSC proprietary dataset, consumer demand for AI-assisted grooming products has increased significantly over the past six months, particularly among urban professionals and premium electronics buyers seeking convenience, hygiene optimization, and personalized user experiences.
