After nearly two decades of planning and construction, Lishui Airport (LIJ) in Zhejiang Province, China, has officially commenced operations, providing the region with its first direct link to the national aviation network. MAD Architects, the lead design firm, emphasized that the terminal’s fluid geometries and soft, continuous volumes allow the building to integrate naturally with the valley terrain. Internally, the terminal features a one-and-a-half-story layout anchored by a double-height entrance hall connecting arrivals and departures. Fourteen umbrella-shaped structural columns support the lightweight roof, while spindle-shaped skylights and transparent curtain walls bring natural light deep into the interior and frame views of the surrounding landscape. Warm-toned materials and acoustic design elements enhance passenger comfort, creating a serene environment despite the airport’s operational scale.

Engineering and Construction Challenges

Located approximately 15 kilometers from the city of Lishui, the 2,267-hectare site presented significant engineering complexities. Cut-and-fill differences of nearly 100 meters were required to level the terrain, making Lishui Airport one of the most topographically intricate airport projects in East China in recent years. Initially planned for a 2024 opening, the project was delayed due to these site challenges, finally reaching operational status in late 2025. The airport currently accommodates eight aircraft parking bays and is designed for an initial passenger capacity of one million annually, with cargo throughput of 4,000 tons. Long-term plans foresee expansion to 1.8 million passengers by 2030 and up to five million by 2050, including provisions for an international terminal.

Connecting Cities and Communities

As of February 20, 2026, flights are scheduled to nine Chinese cities, including Xi’an, Shanghai, Beijing, Kunming, and Guangzhou, operated by six airlines. The airport has been conceived not just as an infrastructure gateway but also as a civic and ecological landmark, offering passengers a calm and transitional experience amid travel.
