Mercedes-Benz is taking a decisive step into the autonomous mobility sector with the launch of an SAE Level 4 robotaxi service using the latest S-Class. The initial deployment will be in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant escalation in the brand’s pursuit of advanced self-driving capabilities.
The S-Class robotaxi combines Mercedes-Benz’s flagship luxury with cutting-edge autonomous technology. At the heart of the system lies MB. OS, the automaker’s proprietary operating system, which orchestrates perception, processing, and fleet-level coordination. Complemented by a comprehensive sensor suite including LiDAR, radar, and multiple cameras the platform ensures redundant safety measures while delivering a chauffeur-grade passenger experience.
“The S-Class robotaxi raises the bar for automated mobility, merging safety and comfort to set new standards for intelligent transportation worldwide,” says Joerg Burzer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz.
The Abu Dhabi fleet will be operated by Lumo, a subsidiary of UAE tech company K2, which already holds federal approval for autonomous vehicle operations. This clearance enables real-world testing of S-Class prototypes on public roads, paving the way for a potential broader rollout to other markets.
Mercedes-Benz is collaborating with Chinese ADAS specialist Momenta for the robotaxi programme, while also exploring future applications with Nvidia’s Drive AV platform. These partnerships reflect the brand’s broader strategy to advance Level 4 ecosystems globally.
Beyond the UAE, Mercedes-Benz maintains Level 4 authorised testing on designated urban roads and highways in Beijing. These S-Class test vehicles utilize multi-sensor fusion, enhancing perception accuracy and supporting integrated decision-making research.
The first deployment stage is taking place in Abu Dhabi, where mobility operator Lumo under parent company K2 will oversee operations. K2 already holds federal authorisation to run autonomous vehicles in the UAE, enabling the S-Class robotaxi fleet to begin public-road testing. This approval ensures a clear pathway for expanding the service into larger routes and potentially other regions.
The move into Level 4 robotaxi services builds on Mercedes-Benz’s decades-long investment in automated driving. From early driver-assist systems to the world’s first internationally approved SAE Level 3 system, Drive Pilot, the company continues to refine MB. Drive with ambitions for Level 3 operation at speeds up to 130 km/h within five years.
Abu Dhabi’s S-Class robotaxi fleet represents a strategic evolution: the luxury flagship, historically defined by owner-driven prestige, is now emerging as a sophisticated autonomous chauffeur.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the Robotaxi Market is poised for substantial growth as urban mobility shifts toward autonomous, shared-ride models. Luxury OEMs, such as Mercedes-Benz, entering this space signal a broader market trend where high-end autonomous fleets are expected to redefine urban transport dynamics, combining premium comfort with operational efficiency. Analysts note that regulatory alignment, sensor innovation, and seamless fleet management will be key drivers shaping adoption rates in the next five years.
Mercedes-Benz’s deployment in Abu Dhabi highlights the convergence of luxury, safety, and autonomy, reinforcing the company’s ambition to lead the global self-driving race.
