Meta Platforms is reportedly exploring potential partnerships with competitors Google and OpenAI to strengthen the artificial intelligence capabilities across its applications, according to The Information. Sources familiar with the matter said that executives at Meta’s newly formed AI division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, have discussed the possibility of integrating Google’s Gemini model to power conversational, text-based responses for user queries on Meta AI, the company’s flagship chatbot.
The Information reported that Meta has held talks about using OpenAI’s models to strengthen Meta AI and other artificial intelligence features across its social media platforms. Any collaborations with external providers, such as Google or OpenAI, are expected to serve as interim measures while Meta continues to advance its own technology. A key focus for Meta Superintelligence Labs is ensuring that its upcoming Llama 5 model can rival competitors in performance.
Internally, Meta has already begun adopting outside AI solutions in select tools for employees. For example, staff can access Anthropic models through the company’s internal coding assistant, according to three sources cited by The Information.
Meta emphasized its comprehensive approach to artificial intelligence, stating, “We are taking an all-of-the-above approach to building the best AI products; and that includes building world-leading models ourselves, partnering with companies, as well as open sourcing technology.”
Meanwhile, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft—OpenAI’s key backer—did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment, and Reuters was unable to independently verify the report.
Earlier this year, Meta strengthened its AI push by committing billions of dollars to recruit high-profile leaders, including former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, who were appointed to co-lead Meta Superintelligence Labs. To further accelerate progress, Meta has also extended lucrative compensation packages to attract dozens of top AI researchers to join the initiative.
