MGS Unveils Strategic Expansion with New Drug Delivery Device Manufacturing Facility

Industry Insights by Next Move Strategy Consulting

MGS has commissioned a state-of-the-art drug delivery device manufacturing facility in Richfield, Wisconsin, significantly expanding its capacity to serve the growing needs of complex combination product makers in the pharmaceutical sector. The 300,000 square-foot site represents a major scaling of U.S. production capabilities for high-volume device sub-assemblies and precision-manufactured components.

Responding to Growth in Injectable Therapies

Rising demand for injectable therapies - particularly autoinjectors and prefilled pen formats associated with GLP-1 treatments - has outpaced existing cleanroom availability, creating manufacturing bottlenecks for combination drug-device products. MGS developed the Richfield facility to support a global pharmaceutical partner’s delivery platform and address these pressures on capacity.

Design and Production at Scale

The new facility includes 140,000 square feet of ISO Class 8 cleanroom space dedicated to automated production and assembly of complex drug delivery devices. The infrastructure supports hundreds of millions of sub-assemblies annually, with more than 100 injection molding machines and custom automation systems already in place. A planned second phase will double production capacity to meet long-term growth.

From day one, every decision was guided by our customer’s needs and the patients they serve,” said Bob Bordignon, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at MGS. He noted that alignment of expertise and vision enabled the project to progress from concept to operation in just 22 months.

Economic and Workforce Impact

MGS anticipates the facility will add 300 jobs spanning engineering, automation, production, quality control, and mold maintenance, with full staffing expected by early 2027. The operation will run on a rotating schedule to support continuous production while offering workforce flexibility.

Strengthening MGS’s Global Footprint

This expansion brings MGS’s global facility count to 12, reinforcing its vertically integrated contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) model that spans early-stage design through advanced tooling and precision manufacturing. With the Richfield site now operational, MGS is positioned to support accelerated delivery of high-complexity drug delivery devices for its pharmaceutical customers.

NMSC Viewpoint

According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the expansion of large-scale, cleanroom-intensive manufacturing facilities reflects the accelerating demand for complex Drug Delivery Devices, particularly those supporting injectable therapies. Investments such as MGS’s 300,000 sq ft Richfield facility highlight a broader industry shift toward vertically integrated production models capable of delivering precision, scalability, and speed to market.

The addition of advanced automation, high-volume molding capabilities, and phased capacity expansion demonstrates how manufacturers are preparing for sustained growth in combination products. As pharmaceutical pipelines increasingly rely on device-enabled therapies, strategic infrastructure development will remain central to ensuring supply continuity and operational resilience.
