Nepal is witnessing its most turbulent unrest in decades as mass protests against corruption spiral into violence, arson, and political upheaval. What began as a youth-driven movement against nepotism and social media restrictions has quickly escalated into nationwide disruption, leaving 29 people dead since Monday.
The protests, initially led by Gen Z groups calling for accountability and reform, have been marred by vandalism and violent clashes. Student leaders insist their movement was non-violent, but allege it was “hijacked” by opportunists exploiting the chaos for looting and destruction. Government buildings, the parliament, and political residences have been torched, while thousands of inmates escaped during the turmoil. On Wednesday, Kathmandu's airport reopened and the capital was relatively quiet as most residents obeyed a curfew, but smoke was still rising from burning buildings.
“The movement remains rooted in peaceful civic engagement,” protesters said in a statement, distancing themselves from the violence. They are now drafting fresh demands and calling for transparent leadership untainted by entrenched political parties.
In response, the Nepali army has deployed patrols and checkpoints across Kathmandu, enforcing strict curfews and warning of punishment for those engaging in unrest. Thirty-one firearms have been seized, and dozens arrested as authorities attempt to restore order.
Amid the destruction, many young people have taken to the streets not to protest but to clean up the damage. “This corruption thing has been in Nepal since a very, very long time… I hope it can bring something positive,” said 14-year-old Ksang Lama while helping with cleanup efforts.
Prime Minister’s resignation has left a power vacuum at the top, fueling uncertainty about the country’s political future. Protesters are demanding independent, competent leadership free from corruption and party influence.
“There is hope for better governance… we feel like it was a lesson for leaders to improve themselves so the country can have a bright future,” said one resident from eastern Nepal.
According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, the protests reflect deep-rooted dissatisfaction with governance and rising demand for transparency in leadership. While the immediate challenge lies in restoring peace and order, the long-term outcome will hinge on Nepal’s ability to deliver political stability and credible reform.
As Nepal reels from the turmoil, both citizens and military leaders stress the urgency of safeguarding civic life and national institutions. The demonstrations, though scarred by violence, highlight a generational demand for accountability one that could reshape the nation’s political trajectory for years to come.
