OpenAI is preparing to introduce its first artificial intelligence chip in 2026 through a partnership with U.S. semiconductor company Broadcom, according to a report from the Financial Times citing people familiar with the matter.
The chip is expected to be used exclusively within OpenAI’s own operations, rather than offered to external customers, the report noted. This approach underscores the company’s focus on securing computing capacity to power its AI systems.
OpenAI and Broadcom did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside of regular business hours. Reuters has not independently verified the report.
Best known for commercializing generative AI capable of producing human-like responses, OpenAI depends heavily on high-performance computing to train and operate its models. Last year, Reuters reported that the company had been working with Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) on its first in-house chip, while also integrating processors from AMD and Nvidia to support rising infrastructure needs.
At that time, OpenAI had reviewed multiple strategies to diversify chip supply and reduce operational costs. In February, Reuters further reported that OpenAI was advancing its plan to lessen reliance on Nvidia by moving forward with its first generation of custom silicon, with sources indicating the design would be sent to TSMC for fabrication.
Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan stated on Thursday that the company anticipates significant growth in artificial intelligence revenue for fiscal year 2026, following more than $10 billion in AI infrastructure orders from a new, unnamed customer. Tan added that the prospect placed a firm order last quarter, elevating it to qualified customer status.
Earlier this year, Tan had suggested that four new potential customers were “deeply engaged” with Broadcom to create custom chips, alongside its three established large clients.
