As neonatal care demands grow increasingly complex, ProMedica has unveiled a pioneering ambulance service exclusively designed for Toledo’s most fragile patients—newborns and premature infants. This specialized transport solution marks a transformative step in regional pediatric healthcare, ensuring the highest standards of medical attention during critical transfers.
Traditional ambulance services often lack the tailored equipment and expertise required for neonatal emergencies. ProMedica’s dedicated ambulance addresses this gap, combining advanced medical technology with a team trained specifically for infant care. This initiative reflects a strategic shift toward precision medicine in emergency response, prioritizing the unique needs of Toledo’s youngest residents.
“There’s everything in there that we would need to take care of any type of baby when we’re out. A lot of premature babies, babies who have issues with breathing, jaundice, cardiac defects,” said Trisha Shammo, a supervisor for the NICU specially transport team.
The move is expected to significantly improve emergency response times and elevate care for the region’s most vulnerable patients.
Response time will be faster.
Will provide an EMT or paramedic to drive and support the medical team.
Cutting down the transport time.
The ambulance’s design focuses on seamless integration with hospital neonatal units, ensuring continuity of care and ready to go, much faster response time. Its modular systems allow adaptability for varying medical scenarios, from premature births to congenital emergencies.
Analysts anticipate this model could inspire similar services across Ohio, elevating standards for neonatal emergency response.
Specifically built to serve newborns requiring critical medical attention, the ambulance acts as a “NICU on wheels,” equipped with advanced ventilators, incubators, and emergency medications. Staffed by ProMedica’s specialized NICU Transport Team—comprising highly trained nurses and respiratory therapists—this dedicated vehicle drastically reduces emergency response times, ensuring faster and safer neonatal transports.
Previously, the transport team faced delays by sharing ambulances with other departments. Now, with a dedicated unit stationed at the hospital’s emergency department, the team can respond immediately, offering faster intervention during critical moments. The ambulance allows NICU experts to focus solely on patient care during transit, providing continuous monitoring and life-support interventions for high-risk infants.
“This ambulance isn’t just a vehicle—it’s an extension of our NICU,” said hospital officials, emphasizing their commitment to delivering specialized care both within the hospital and throughout the region.
The new ambulance will also get plenty of mileage. The NICU team does more than 300 transports each year for 35 hospitals all around northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
