SAIL Rourkela’s Triple Certification Strengthens Shipbuilding Steel Supply

Industry Insights from Next Move Strategy Consulting

As global demand for high-quality materials used in ship construction continues to grow, the recent certification milestone achieved by Steel Authority of India Limited’s Rourkela Steel Plant marks a significant advancement in the shipbuilding ecosystem. The plant has secured three major certifications for producing shipbuilding-grade steel plates, reinforcing its capability to support both domestic and international maritime manufacturing requirements.

The achievement positions the facility as the first unit within SAIL to simultaneously hold certifications from leading classification and standards bodies, strengthening its role in supplying specialized steel for shipbuilding applications.

Achieving a Major Certification Milestone

The steel plant has successfully obtained approvals from three prominent institutions involved in maritime and industrial standards:

Key Certifications Secured:

  • DNV Certification from Det Norske Veritas

  • IRS Certification from Indian Register of Shipping

  • Manufacturing License from the Bureau of Indian Standards

These approvals authorize the plant to manufacture shipbuilding-grade steel plates that meet strict industry and regulatory standards. With this development, the Rourkela facility becomes the first unit within SAIL to achieve all three certifications concurrently.

The certificates were formally presented to Alok Verma, Director In-Charge of the plant, during a ceremony held at the Manthan Conference Hall on 5 March 2026. Senior leadership and operational executives of the facility were also present at the event, underscoring the significance of the accomplishment.

Strengthening Capabilities in Shipbuilding Materials

Shipbuilding steel requires stringent quality validation to ensure structural durability and safety in maritime environments. Certification by recognized classification societies confirms that manufacturing processes, testing procedures, and material specifications meet international maritime standards.

By obtaining approvals from these bodies, the Rourkela facility enhances its ability to supply certified steel plates suitable for use in ship construction and related marine applications. The development also expands the plant’s credentials within specialized steel production, a segment that demands strict compliance and technical expertise.

According to Next Move Strategy Consulting

According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, this certification milestone is expected to strengthen the supply chain for the shipbuilding market by improving the availability of certified shipbuilding steel from domestic producers. With recognized approvals from international and national bodies, manufacturers may gain greater confidence in sourcing high-grade materials locally, potentially supporting the expansion of shipbuilding projects and related maritime infrastructure.

Such developments can also encourage increased investment in specialized steel production and reinforce the strategic role of certified steel plants in advancing shipbuilding capabilities.
