Alstom and Northrail Sign €700M Traxx Shunter Framework Deal at InnoTrans 2026 Berlin

BERLIN, Germany September 24, 2026 Alstom and European locomotive leasing company Northrail have signed a framework agreement for the supply of up to 100 Traxx Shunter locomotives, with a total potential value of EUR 700 million, at the InnoTrans 2026 rail trade fair in Berlin. The deal, which embeds digital signalling and predictive maintenance technologies at the platform level, reinforces the momentum of the Smart Railway System Market as European rail brands accelerate their digitization strategies in response to growing interoperability and decarbonisation mandates. 

The agreement was announced on September 23 at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin. The firm order placed by Northrail covers Traxx Shunter locomotives fitted with pantograph-based electric power and diesel propulsion, along with 10-year maintenance services, with the firm component valued at just under EUR 100 million. First deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2029, with the locomotives to be designed and assembled at Alstom's centre of excellence in Belfort, France.

The new Traxx Shunter platform features a modular and scalable architecture intended for a wide range of operations, from shunting and infrastructure works to mainline service. The locomotives will be equipped with Alstom's Onvia ETCS modular system, enabling integration with national signalling systems across European networks. For maintenance, Alstom will deploy HealthHub, its digital condition monitoring and predictive maintenance solution, designed to optimise locomotive availability, reliability, and operational management.

The framework also provides for additional locomotives for operation in France, with maintenance services for periods of up to 20 years. The locomotives are designed to run on liquid diesel, including HVO (vegetable oil) or biodiesel, and are capable of speeds up to 120 km/h, positioning the platform as a transitional solution in Europe's structured shift away from conventional diesel rolling stock.
